The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is currently searching for students to join our CIVIL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM in multiple areas and locations throughout the state.

The Civil Engineering Scholarship Program offers civil engineering students the opportunity to gain valuable, real-world experiences while earning money to assist with educational expenses. This program provides a pipeline of engineers for VDOT. Additionally, Scholars will receive a $3,500 stipend each semester.

These positions are available in multiple locations. Positions are available in the Central Office (downtown Richmond) and the districts Richmond, Salem, Bristol, Lynchburg, Staunton, Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads.

The internship program is designed to give interns exposure to a variety of work assignments and special projects within the department that will provide professional and career development. This program also allows interns the opportunity to work closely within a diverse work environment that values inclusiveness.

SUMMER WORK
Scholars will participate in a paid developmental work assignment each summer from May until August. A variety of engineering experiences are available. A Scholar may work in a capacity related to their knowledge and experience level in areas such as Structure & Bridge, Location & Design, Environmental, Construction & Materials. Scholars are encouraged but not required to work in a different location across the state of Virginia each summer to increase the breadth of their experiences and prepare them for a successful engineering career (housing & relocation are not provided).

SEMESTER STIPEND
A $3,500.00 stipend is issued to Scholars at the beginning of Fall and Spring semesters. These funds are not gift-aid and will not conflict with gift-aid scholarships.

AFTER GRADUATION EMPLOYMENT
Upon graduation the Scholar is placed in the Core Development Program as a full-time employee in a civil engineering position. The Scholar is contractually obligated to stay with VDOT to repay their stipend; six months for each stipend received. Repayment of stipend is required from Scholar if he/she decides to leave VDOT.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels and ferry systems. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, VDOT also provides funding for airports, rail and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country, employing just over 7,500 employees across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Be a US citizen or permanent US resident.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • As of May 2019, be a rising sophomore (2nd), junior (3rd) or senior (4th) year of undergraduate study or a graduate student in a 2-year or 4-year accredited college/university
  • Possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours per semester for graduate students.

Successful interns will be motivated, customer focused and action-oriented individuals with a drive for learning on the job and achieving results. You will have demonstrated ability to make quality and timely decisions, take initiative, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, prioritize and organize multiple demands in a continuously changing environment, and meet established deadlines. Ability to anticipate problems, provide solutions, follow instructions, learn quickly and collaborate with teammates.

o $15.50/hour Undergraduate Student
o $17.50/hour Graduate Student

  • Some Engineering Intern positions may require unrestricted mobility including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain; work in an outdoor environment; and the ability to lift, bend and stand for long periods of time.
  • Assignments may include requirements to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety vest, safety boots, etc.) and the ability to work from heights (may include requirements to wear fall protections equipment).
