GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Travels to the field to pick up and/or obtain client samples for analysis in the laboratory. Follows specific instructions pertaining to the type of sample being collected and may involve aseptic techniques, client interviews, and/or digital photography. Performs analytical testing and associated techniques on environmental samples. Applies quality principles and adheres to the laboratory?s quality policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Follow pick-up schedule provided by Supervisor.
Travel to pick up and/or collect client samples for analysis.
Follow specific instructions pertaining to the type of sample being collected which may involve aseptic techniques and client interviews.
Perform analysis of samples in the field including, but not limited to, pH, combustible gas index readings and flow readings.
Take digital photographs as required.
Complete appropriate related paper work as required.
Confirm projects and necessary paper work by communicating and interacting with Pre-Drill Coordinator and Laboratory Manager.
Prepare bottleware orders including appropriate preservatives, labels, and packaging.
Perform analytical testing and associated techniques using laboratory instrumentation.
Demonstrate acceptable results for blanks, precision, accuracy, method detection and specificity and satisfactory analysis of unknown samples.
Review analytical data.
Comply with safety rules and regulations to include determining proper handling procedures of samples
Perform additional projects as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS

50% of time spent in the field and traveling, with balance of time spent in laboratory/office work environment. Potential exposure to moving machinery, dust, noise, temperature changes, hazardous chemicals and outside nature and weather conditions. May require travel, overtime, evenings, and weekends. Due to nature of position, must be able to deal with meeting deadlines. Some PPE required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Ability to perform under pressure and withstand weather and field conditions. Must have ability to effectively verbally communicate with clients and the public. When applicable, six months of experience in the operation of either: AA, IC, GC, ICP and twelve months of experience in operation of ICP/MS or GC/MS. Data produced while in process of obtaining adequate training or experience is acceptable when reviewed and validated by a fully qualified analyst or laboratory manager. Must obtain acceptable results for an Initial Demonstration of Capability. Basic PC skills, including Windows, Excel, Word and Outlook, including strong attention to detail with strong written and verbal communication and effective listening skills. Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of individuals at all levels of the organization. Ability to work independently with strong initiative and focus. While performing duties of job, incumbent is required to stand; use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, bend and/or twist; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift, push or carry a minimum of 50 lbs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a good driving record. Must have strong work ethic and attention to detail, effective communication skills, and be able to work independently or part of a team. Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, environmental science, biology, microbiology, physical sciences, or other related discipline preferred. Satisfactory completion of a short course in the operation of the instrument (e.g. AA IC, ICP, ICP/MS, GC, GC/MS) offered by manufacturer or another qualified training facility. A period of apprenticeship under an experienced analyst shall be considered an equivalent alternative. When applicable, at least 16 college semester credit hours in chemistry (for chemical analysis) or biology/microbiology (for microbiological analysis). One year of experience in the chemical analysis of samples preferred.
