The Public Affairs team is part of Microsoft’s broader Communications group, and part of the company’s Corporate, External and Legal Affairs team. The Public Affairs team works at the intersection of technology, public policy and corporate reputation. Issues we manage include corporate social responsibility, corporate philanthropy, privacy, security, accessibility, sustainability and a range of other high-profile public policy issues.
We’re looking for a multimedia content producer and reporter with experience working across mediums, particularly video, who can help support the evolution our Public Affairs storytelling. You will oversee the creation of content for different platforms, partnering with internal and external partners. You will have the power to direct work across video, graphics, animation, photography, writing and more. The content you create will help inform and inspire policymakers, business leaders and Microsoft customers around the world.
You will report to the Digital Editor for Public Affairs, but you will work closely with members of the team who manage individual issue-based campaigns to ensure the content you create meets the goals of their campaigns. You will also coordinate closely with those who create content across the company, taking advantage of the company’s existing infrastructure capabilities and resources. Part of this will include partnering with Microsoft Production Studios, a full-service, in-house studio on campus, as well as the company’s preferred video and photography partners. Some of your work will include long-lead planning, and some of it will be quick-turn responses to noteworthy issues.
You will excel at communicating our team’s vision with outside vendors to produce and execute powerful, human, relatable stories that aren’t corporate-speak. You will be able to move quickly while also complying with rules and standards; communicate effectively to ensure everyone is on the same page; shepherd projects through reviews on deadline; manage budgets; and balance resource constraints.
Content planning: You will work with members of the Public Affairs team to help translate storytelling opportunities into ideas for creative video and multimedia content the world will find compelling. You’ll have an eye for ensuring we have a consistent pipeline of video and other content that reflects the team’s priorities and that the content informs and inspires our audiences beyond marketing messages. The content you create will be built for our first-party web properties and social channels, but must also be mindful of social media distribution platforms managed by others on the team.
Reporting: You will work with internal experts, field teams, agencies and independent vendors to track down and capture compelling content both on Microsoft’s campus and around the world. This may include interviewing interesting people impacted by our public policy campaigns; planning and directing video shoots; and researching stories to tell through photojournalism.
Production: You will oversee the final production of content by working with video editors and others. This will include producing content fit for the content’s distribution plans; seeking approval of content from executives and subject matter experts internally; and delivering content to web and social media teams on time and in the proper formats.
Assessment: You will examine the performance of content and continuously learn more about what performs well with what audiences and build those learnings into future work. You will also be responsible for maintaining ongoing analytics related to content, and for setting and achieving benchmarks for growth.
Skills and experiences
You’ll have 6+ years of PR, multimedia, production, content marketing, communications or journalism experience.
You’ll have at least a bachelor’s degree.
You’ll be a sharp observer of domestic and global public policy issues with an ability to reflect the company’s need to remain a thoughtful and often non-partisan contributor to debates.
You’ll be a world-class storyteller, able to identify and bring powerful stories to life across multiple formats.
You’ll have a strong understanding of digital media and experience creating content that performs well for online audiences.
You’ll be used to collaborating with creative teams to deliver great work.
You’ll have strong strategic communications skills with the experience and ability to develop and implement robust plans.
You should be comfortable working across organizational boundaries both inside the company and with our external partners.
