The Museum Assistant is a multi-faceted position that is responsible for a variety of tasks needed to operate the Phoenix Airport Museum. This position has a focus in collections management but may also include tasks in art exhibition coordination, installation and large-scale public art maintenance coordination. This recruitment may be used by any department that has a vacancy over the life of the eligible-for-hire list

Currently a vacancy exists in the Aviation Department's Museum Section. Responsibilities of this position may include:

Administering a collections management program
Managing the accession process for donated artworks
Assisting with design and installation of art and history exhibitions
Safely transporting and handling art and museum objects
Designing and producing exhibit signs and labels
Packing and unpacking art and museum objects
Conducting research and writing
Processing loans for borrowed artworks and historic objects
Maintaining computerized data base and inventory systems for the Airport’s art and historic collections
Constructing necessary mounts for displaying artworks and museum objects
Preparing gallery and display spaces for exhibition
Photographically documenting exhibitions and historic objects
Coordinating the maintenance of public art and exhibition display areas
Responding to public inquiries about the Phoenix Airport Museum
Assess future cleaning and maintenance needs for public artwork and display areas

$19.38 (minimum) - $28.93 (maximum) hourly / $40,310 - $60,174 annually.

Three years of professional museum, art center or public art collection experience which includes at least one year in an area of specialization such as Collections Management, Registrar or, exhibit design and installation.
A bachelor's degree or higher in visual arts, art history, museum studies, art education, architectural design or art related field.
Some positions require the use of a personal or City vehicle on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record.
An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The job requirements listed above, plus:

Experience in maintaining records for art and historic collections
Knowledge of accepted museum standard practices and methods
Proficient with Past Perfect Museum software
Knowledge of properly storing, cleaning and maintaining a variety of art and historic objects
Knowledge of installation methods for a variety of fine art, cultural/historical artifacts.
Knowledge of artwork construction and fabrication methods
