As a professional services company, our success depends on scheduling work across multiple projects so that they stay on track and our team members can meet revenue goals weekly. While our project managers are focused on client relationships and successful project delivery, our operations manager will focus on balancing the workload, filling holes and negotiating between competing project needs in order to maintain profitability and help the entire team operate more smoothly and efficiently. This is a new position at NewCity, so you will have a hand in shaping the role. This is great position for someone who likes spreadsheets as much as people.
As the Operations Manager at NewCity, you will:
Be primarily responsible for our master spreadsheet where we forecast revenue and cash flow and manage other operational factors.
Meet with project managers regularly to update plans for who will be working how much on which projects over the next several weeks and months.
Meet with the business development team regularly to discuss timing of new project starts.
Meet with the finance team regularly to update billing projections and cash flow forecast.
Work with everyone to fill holes when a team member is light by rearranging project schedules or coordinating the start of new work.
Support business development in onboarding new clients and projects.
Work with the rest of our team to continually improve NewCity’s approach.
Be able to confidently discuss, wrangle and negotiate solutions as you gain understanding of our process.
You have at least 5 years work experience including 3 years supporting or managing the financial or operational side of a business.
You have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
You like finding ways to make processes better.
You don’t get lost in the details, but are able to keep the big picture in view.
You have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
You spot trouble way down the road and head it off.
You’re always learning, and you share what you learn.
You’re comfortable with technology and like to try out new software.
Everyone who works with you knows that when you take responsibility for something - it’s as good as done.
Basic principles of business accounting
How to build complex spreadsheets in Excel or Google Sheets, including formulas, graphics, pivot tables and the like
Knowledge of website design and development isn’t required but would be a plus.
Programming experience isn’t required but it’s a plus, particularly as it relates to spreadsheets and business tools.
Salary and Benefits
We offer competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package. Some benefits are only available to employees who work 32 hours or more per week. The salary for this position will vary based on experience and we are happy to discuss the range with qualified candidates. We’re looking for someone available to work full-time, but we may be able to work out a part-time position for the right candidate.
This position is in our Blacksburg, Virginia office. We allow employees to work one day a week from home, but this position is not feasible for a fully remote employee. We do cover a portion of relocation expenses.
