What You'll Do Here:
The UX Designer will work closely with UX Researchers, Product Development Managers, Art Directors, Front End Developers, and Visual Designers to create highly engaging products on the MindTap School platform for our end users, while advocating for their needs during the production process. The UX Designer helps shape how teachers, students, and administrators effectively use and interact with print and digital curriculum.
The User Experience Designer will work to understand the needs of internal stakeholders for each K–12 publishing center, and assists them in achieving the required business goals and the instructional goals of the users. The role requires a high degree of collaboration across all functions; and demands that the employee is organized, communicative and accountable.
The UX Designer will understand the user’s relationship between the art of design and the science of human interaction, and will contribute to successfully integrating them into our products.
User Experience Design 75%
Collaborate with UX Research to define user personas and use case and write user stories and epics.
Define the user experience for product and platform by creating storyboards, wireframes, mockups for regular usability tests in order to determine how the user is going to successfully interact with them.
Transform complex tasks into an intuitive, easy-to-use experience through thoughtful experience and interaction design. Anticipate what K–12 users need and advocate for them, ensuring interactions are as simple and efficient as possible in order to accomplish user goals.
Collaborate with UX Researchers during all stages of user research and design prototyping to validate and test ideas, including observational studies, customer interviews, usability testing, and other forms of discovery.
Effectively communicate research findings, conceptual ideas, detailed design, and design rationale both verbally and visually, including presenting to product owners, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
Collaborate with Content Development, UI Design, Media Research, and Front End Developer on creation of high-fidelity interactive POC prototypes.
Ensure that MindTap School product and platform have a cohesive and seamless flow so that the user can intuitively navigate the whole experience.
Program planning and management 15%
Participating in team meetings throughout the pre-production process, from ideation through planning.
Participate in team meetings throughout the live development process as needed.
Create user experience and functional specification documentation to provide guidance to production, software development and QA teams, overseeing and ensuring that design and functionality are successfully implemented.
Establish relationships with Product Directors to understand unique and common market, customer, and product needs for both print and digital components.
Establish relationships and effectively communicate with NGL K-12 Engineering; Cengage Digital Production Services, and Cengage QA throughout product design and development as needed.
Collaborative development 10%
Work with the Creative Director, Art Director, and UI Designers to implement best practices towards excellent design and NGL brand experiences
Explore and promote ways to streamline digital product development processes
Collaborates with team leaders and managers to meet project milestones and deadlines
Develop an understanding of the resources of the National Geographic Society and seek opportunities to utilize them in engaging digital experiences.

Skills You Will Need Here:
Undergraduate degree, or equivalent experience, with an emphasis on Visual Design, Web Design, Interactive Media, or Computer Science.
Five-years professional experience in interaction design or user experience design
Knowledge of learning as a discipline as well as learning design and instructional design methodologies.
Basic understanding of HTML5, CSS3
Understanding of current front-end web technologies, native interface guidelines, web services, and APIs
Experience with design principles such as responsive design, mobile first design, and data driven design.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
Experience in a collaborative working environment.
Ability to manage project deliverable to schedule and budget.
Attention to detail and organizational skills required.
Ability to deal with ambiguity and problem solving.
High proficiency in a Macintosh-based design environment using Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Sketch, and InVision.
Experience in K-12 educational market.
Experience with Microsoft Office
Bi-lingual English/Spanish speaker
Experience working in JIRA
