Workweek: Monday-Friday (20 hours per week)

Salary: $15/hr.

The City of Jersey City Division of City Planning is seeking a talented and energetic assistant to work part-time with the Historic Preservation staff to assist in the daily operations of reviewing applications within the City’s five historic districts and twelve municipally-designated landmarks.

Job Duties:

  • Assist the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) staff in reviewing Certificate of Appropriateness applications for completeness and compliance with the Secretary of Interior Standards for Historic Preservation, JC Rule and Regulations for Alterations and Additions to Buildings and new Construction in Historic Districts and the Jersey City Historic Preservation Ordinance.
  • Assist in reviewing and approving Certificate of No Effect applications per the standards outlined in Secretary of Interior Standards for Historic Preservation, JC Rule and Regulations for Alterations and Additions to Buildings and new Construction in Historic Districts and the Jersey City Historic Preservation Ordinance.
  • Support HPC Staff in reviewing Demolition Applications and Determination of Significance Applications per the standards outlined in Chapter 105 entitled Building Demolition.
  • Clerical tasks such as filing, correspondence with the public, application intake, digitizing records, etc.
  • Participate in public meetings as necessary, such as Historic Preservation Commission meetings, Planning Board meetings, Zoning Board of Adjustment meetings, City Council meetings, etc.

Required Educational Background:

Undergraduate, Current Graduate student or recent Graduate from a Historic Preservation Program.

Required Experience:

Relevant interest and experience working with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, architecture, urban planning, history and historic preservation.

  • Ability to provide quality customer services in person and over the telephone;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other employees;
  • Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
