JSEG Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Venting Analyst (Entry Level)

We are searching for a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Venting Analyst to support the Aerosciences branch of Marshall’s Spacecraft and Vehicle Systems Department (EV). This team applies engineering expertise to the design and development of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) heavy-lift launch vehicle by providing analysis vital to the completion of the SLS mission that includes:

base heating plume radiation, recirculation, and impingement

ascent and reentry for aerodynamics, aerodynamic heating, compartment venting, and acoustics

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Analyze aerodynamic venting for a variety of compartments for space transportation vehicles

Select and apply engineering techniques and procedures to analyze and evaluate specific problems, data, or other features of the work which are broad in scope and complexity

Review and evaluate the quantity, quality, and overall adequacy of results and conclusions drawn from accomplishment of engineering tasks

The selected candidate will be expected to operate with general instructions. Selected portions of work will be reviewed in detail to measure adequacy of approach, execution, and presentation. Participation is also required for task team meetings, technical interchange meetings, and program reviews.

Degree in Engineering or related discipline required; Engineering degree from an ABET accredited university preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Bachelors with 3-5 years of experience, or a Masters with 2-3 years of experience.

A background in theoretical/computational analyses of fluid dynamics and aerodynamics of space transportation vehicles using state-of-the-art methodologies and tools

Experience using Computational Fluid Dynamics Codes

Experience with programming language(s) such as MATLAB, C++, Python, and/or Fortran

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with the customer and other particpants

Experience with Microsoft Office products

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
