Summary / Objective:
The Parks Maintenance Worker I performs a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks related to the planting
and maintenance of flowers, shrubs, trees and turf; or construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation facilities and grounds. Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal, flood response and other natural disasters. The Parks Maintenance Worker I operates various types of light to moderately heavy vehicles and equipment. Essential Functions / Responsibilities: ~Assists with trash removal, lawn debris and general clean-up of park property and facilities.
~Assists in preparing park property and facilities for public use including but not limited to setting up and breaking down of furniture and ensuring public restrooms and shelter houses are clean and functioning properly.
~Ensures all division equipment and vehicles are in proper operating condition prior to use. Duties include but are not limited to adhering to maintenance schedules, checking oil supplies, changing blades and lubricating equipment. Notifies supervisor of unsafe equipment.
~Employee will be required to assist with snow removal operations and other emergency activities which require occasionally working extended shifts and after normal working hours, including weekends and/or holidays. Typical emergency shifts are twelve hours.
~Employee may be cross-trained in forestry, horticulture, turf maintenance, irrigation, and facility and aquatics repair and maintenance, and will serve as backup on crews when needed.
~Employee will be asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the department.
~Employee will be assigned to one of the following crews.
Forestry and Horticulture
~Assists with the planting, removal and overall maintenance of trees in right-of-way, city facilities and parks.
~Assists in regular inspections for insect, weed and disease problems in trees, shrubs and plantings.
~Assists in the landscaping and maintenance of City-owned facilities and parks by performing such duties as, but not limited to, planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, pest control and watering of trees, shrubs, and natural areas and perennial and annual plants.
~Assists with the maintenance and turf management of lawn areas at parks, athletic fields, facilities, and right-of-ways around the City. Duties include but are not limited to mowing, fertilizing, spraying, watering, aerating seeding, sodding, edging, and trimming.
~Assists with preparing and maintaining the athletic fields in which duties include but are not limited to dragging, mowing, painting, chalking, and installing goals, nets, and bleachers.
~Assists with the maintenance of the City"s playgrounds; ensuring any damaged or broken equipment or components are taken care of and preventative maintenance is completed.
~Assists in the preparation, maintenance, and winterization of City"s pool facilities. Duties include but are not limited to painting and preparing pool surface, routine pool cleaning, and maintenance of pumps and circulation systems.
~Assists in the maintenance and construction of trails/paths and sidewalks including asphalt repair, flood debris removal, bridge maintenance, installation and repair with using concrete, asphalt, pavers or stone.
~Assists in the building maintenance of park facilities by performing maintenance, repair and construction of park facilities to include but limited to plumbing, electrical, patching asphalt and concrete, painting, welding, sign construction and repairing playground equipment.

~Ability to use safe work practices while on the job, including following proper and established procedures in the use of equipment, and wearing the appropriate and/or required safety and personal protective gear.
~Ability to demonstrate mechanical aptitude for department equipment.
~Ability to demonstrate the proficient use of equipment required of the position.
~Standard office procedures, systems and practices including the use of a computer.
~Must be able to withstand exposure to noise from equipment, machines, and vehicles.
~Must have adequate environmental tolerance, including the ability to work in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, storms, heat, cold and any other weather indigenous to the area. Education, Training, and Certification Requirements - ~Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
~Two (2) years of experience in parks maintenance, horticulture or forestry maintenance, preferred.
~Must have or be able to acquire a Class B Commercial
Driver"s License (CDL) within 6 months of hire.
~Must successfully complete and demonstrate a knowledge of
eight (8) hours of training annually in the areas of Communication, Customer
Service, Conflict Management and Workplace Safety. The avenue in which the courses and/or
training is completed must be approved by the supervisor.
~Completion of NIMS requirement within one year of hire
~Must possess a valid driver"s license and acceptable
driving record per the City"s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy
throughout employment with the city. Additional Information: The two (2) opened positions will be assigned to the Horticulture and Forestry Crew.
