Under the direction of the Manager of Overnights and supervision of the Overnight Captain, this position performs all vital functions of overnight and scout educational programming including Semi-Private and Private Overnights.
This role will facilitate night hikes, games, and activities in accordance with the Zoo’s goals, specifically: exceeding the expectations of guests by providing friendly, outgoing, and mannerly services and in accordance with the Zoo’s mission, specifically: conservation, education, and recreation.
Essential Job Functions:
Work effectively within a team of educators to facilitate night hikes, educational games and activities for guests of the Zoo’s Overnight Program.
Coordinate with internal team members, including but not limited to: food service, docent members, animal keepers, public safety, and Zoo on Wheels staff for smooth execution of each overnight guest experience.
Demonstrate consistent conservation education messages in all programming areas.
Demonstrate an understanding of group dynamics and ability to manage assemblies of children and adult leaders in an engaging and friendly manner that fosters a positive experience for all guests.
Possess knowledge of safety and security policies and procedures as well as animal safety issues.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Zoo’s animal collection, safety procedures, conservation programs, and specific knowledge of zoo grounds.
Abide by all education animal-handling guidelines and exhibit the highest standard of animal care.
Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Ability Requirements:
Ability to adapt to changes in schedule, programming, and assigned responsibilities while not only maintaining a high degree of work quality, but also mitigating any potential grievances to ensure an excellent experience for Zoo overnight guests.
Ability to learn and convey detailed information about the Zoo’s animal collection, exhibits, and mission.
Excellent customer service skill, ability to communicate effectively with visitors, supervisors, and co-workers.
Professional appearance and manner.
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
Excellent presentation skills and the ability to adapt to audiences of different ages and groups of varying sizes.
Physical and Medical Requirements:
No allergies to plants or animals, which may interfere with ability to work.
No impairments of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance, or agility of movement (which cannot be corrected with appropriate devices) which would interfere with ability to work.
Ability to lift 25 lbs and walk briskly for 30 minutes at a time.
Successful completion of a post-offer background checks, including criminal, child abuse clearance, and credit history.
Minimum age of 18 or older
High school diploma or its equivalent (GED) required
1. Ability to stand and maintain alertness for long periods of time in all weather conditions.
