The Dairy Records Management Systems (DRMS) provides aggregation, editing and Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) processing services for 21 dairy farmer cooperatives with 38 laboratories and 13,000 dairy farmer clients owning more than 2.2 million cows in 45 states. This makes DRMS the largest volume processor of DHIA information in the world. Additionally, DRMS develops software for distributed on-farm desktops, hand-held PDAs and web services that are used for herd management by dairy farmers, data collection by field data collectors and dairy herd assessment by veterinarians, consultants and Extension Specialists. Our mission is to provide superior dairy management information systems to our customers.
Essential Job Duties
The Assistant Director for Dairy Technology provides leadership for the application of dairy science principles to the development of management information and applications software for dairy producers and dairy industry members. Assess industry needs and provide requirements to ensure that DRMS delivers the appropriate functionality of existing and new features. Working closely with the Director, the Assistant Director for Program Development and the DRMS Advisory Board to establish direction, goals and priorities for program development staff and for the organization.
The candidate will also be eligible to hold associated academic rank (non tenure-track) as Extension Professor, based on their record of scholarly achievement to support such rank, a favorable vote of the departmental voting faculty, and recommendation from the Head and Dean consistent with University policies. Associated academic rank supports key duties that are consistent with extension faculty duties, including: communicating with industry members including dairy producers, corporate clients, extension specialists, veterinarians, nutritionists, and management specialists on the application of dairy management systems from DRMS. Importantly, please note that associated academic rank remains concurrent with, and contingent upon, the candidate’s continued at-will appointment as Asst Director for DRMS. It does not imply tenure or any retreat rights.
Develop and deliver innovative educational programs including webinars and educational videos. Attend state, regional and national meetings to discuss information and software from DRMS. Provide training and leadership for proper use of dairy science by DRMS User Support Services. Advise DRMS staff on appropriate marketing approaches. Write articles for newsletters and popular dairy press.
Stay abreast of current and anticipated dairy science practices for producers and consultants by participating in scientific meetings such as American Dairy Science Association, National Mastitis Council and Dairy Cattle Reproductive Council. Conduct applied research relating to current or potential DRMS software to explore appropriate improvements in dairy management systems. Develop internal technical documents.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Dairy/Animal Science and demonstrated productivity and excellence in previous position(s). The successful candidate must have at least five years progressive experience using dairy management records.
