Head Lifeguard (two positions available)
DEPARTMENT: Athletics
REPORTS TO: Aquatics Director
STATUS: Regular Part-time, $16-$18/Hour
Typical Hours Weekdays 3:15-8:30pm, Saturdays 6:30-1:00pm

SUMMARY: Lifeguards ensure the aquatics programming is running appropriately, stepping in if needed. Some management of the lifeguarding staff may be required in the absence of the Aquatics Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
- Supervises swimmers and assures patron safety.
- Take appropriate lifesaving action(s) when needed.
- May assist in teaching swim lessons if staffing requires it.
- May assist in coaching the swim team if staffing requires it and appropriate certifications are obtained.
- Maintains proper conduct of patrons in all areas of the pool facility.
- Maintains a safe pool environment including keeping the pool, deck, and surrounding areas clean and free of hazards.
- Interacts with users to encourage maximum proper use of all facilities.
- May assist with maintenance of water clarity and chemistry to meet or exceed industry standards.
- Assists in supervising aquatic staff in the absence of the Aquatics Director.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May supervise pool staff in the absence of the Aquatics Director. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, recommending, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; report any rewarding and/or coaching of employees to the Aquatics Director; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school Diploma, Associate’s Degree/Post-Secondary education in Recreation Administration or related field preferred. Minimum of 2 years of lifeguard experience or other related program area; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate. Desirable certifications are current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and/or Instructor Trainer and/or willingness to obtain in the first year of employment.
