Sr Mgr, Engineering (Mgr II, Engineering) Summary:
Leads Baxter’s Global Engineering Molding and Extrusion Center of Excellence to drive technical innovation and ensure overall support for the development, validation and maintenance of Plastics Process Engineering.
Establishes the strategy and vision for the center of excellence that aligns with the overall Global Engineering vision and strategic plan. Based on significant
technical expertise, reviews and approves complex Molding and Extrusion design concepts and provides leadership and direction to technical staff.
This position is responsible for providing leadership to manufacturing process ‘Technical Experts’, within the molding and extrusion areas. This position will build internal and external manufacturing process competencies critical to the long-term success of Baxter. These include manufacturing process innovation, standardization, make/buy analysis, DFM/DFA and process development/ validation/implementation activities in support of our product lifecycle, continuous improvement initiatives and technical support of current product/process issues.
The role will report to the Sr. Director, Engineering. Key stakeholders include specific Technical Experts within the corporate and plant Engineering Teams, Procurement organization, the Supplier Quality and Supplier Developmental teams, and Baxter Global Integrated Supply Chain leadership.
Lead overall strategy for the development and implementation of plastics processing technologies focused on innovation and establishing global best practices that promote reduced capital spend, superior quality and cost position, and time to market objectives.
Responsible for leading multimillion-dollar cross-functional projects
Lead and develop a team of Process Engineers to enable a culture of innovation, technical expertise, service orientation and high performance.
Develop and continuously improve process specific standards that define how team will support tool development, deployment, monitoring and maintenance of tools at internal locations and external suppliers.
Applies state of the art techniques in equipment and processes through technology road mapping and technology introduction planning.
Lead engagement and review of New Products through analysis of components/products for tooling and technology capability. Work with product development teams to optimize part design for manufacturability while meeting or improving part specifications, production Key Process Indicators and cost optimization goals.
Complete tooling risk analysis using tools such as FMEA, Mold Flow, etc. to reduce potential for processing failures. Independently, or in collaboration with other technical leaders, engages in the conceptualization and planning of new technologies and production solutions.
Support development of quotations and capital expense management. Monitor and assess subcontracted mold designs ensuring they conform to Baxter standards/specifications. Facilitate support of First off tool, Factory Acceptance Testing, or other trials as needed by NPD or Process Improvement teams.
Assist the process engineers during First Article Inspection (FAI) runs and other supplier development activities.
Work with Tooling Vendor or tool rooms to address outstanding tooling issues as needed. Provide ongoing support of current processes and equipment.
Prioritize and support plant team needs in the resolution of tooling and process related issues. Support Production/Plant engineering in the design and implementation of equipment for continuous improvement and lean manufacturing deployment.
Direct experience or advanced training applicable to the processing of thermoplastics and/or extruded materials in a production environment.
Successful track record of developing employees and managing teams.
Ability to design and influence outside of immediate scope of responsibility.
Experience in supporting product and process development through the lifecycle of the product and associated assets.
Extensive cross-functional team experience, including technical and non-technical work.
Ability to organize and present technical and project management overviews without assistance.
Demonstrated proficiency in use and application of tools such as Process FMEA, Control Strategies, modeling and simulation software, statistical methods, problem analysis and resolution, materials science, design of experiments.
Previous work with Medical Grade Plastics and Processes preferred.
Possess certifications in Systematic Molding, Master Molder I, and Master Molder II or equivalent.
Education and Experience
BS in relevant engineering discipline, MS preferred, 10-12 years’ experience
