The Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) is the state agency responsible for administering public assistance programs to low-income residents of the Commonwealth. DTA is committed to providing a high level of service to all those in need of our services. The mission of the Department is to assist and empower low-income individuals and families to meet their basic needs, improve their quality of life, and achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency. We serve one out of every eight people in Massachusetts – including working families, children, elders and people with disabilities. Our services include food and nutritional assistance, cash assistance, and employment supports. With our support, our clients are given the tools to improve their economic self-sufficiency.
This is a provisional appointment.
We are seeking qualified applicants for the position of Human Service Assistant (HSA). Our ideal candidate will provide written and/or oral interpretation and translation services to assist clients in completing and/or obtaining necessary verifications for eligibility determination. The duties will include but are not limited to:
Responsible for accurate communication between clients and agency staff members taking into consideration the cultural and linguistic differences.
Facilitate customer service delivery by providing interpretation services to clients such as responding to inquiries, and explaining basic department policy and procedures.
Promote customer service delivery through document processing and management.
Utilize department electronic systems and equipment to provide ongoing assistance and technical support to Case Workers.
Assist agency staff as requested with special projects and assignments related to the field of interpreting and/or services for clients with language barriers.
Gather and review information to facilitate complaint resolution.
Exchange information with internal and external contacts per existing department policies.
Provide administrative support within the local office as assigned by the supervisor.
Perform other related duties as required.
NOTE: Selected candidates must take and pass a language proficiency examination which will test the English and Spanish language reading comprehension, conversational and writing skills, and oral interpreting skills.
Massachusetts Interpreter Certification preferred.
Dual proficiency to effectively communicate in reading, writing, and conversing in English and Spanish.
Proven ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
Commitment to working with diverse populations.
Proficient PC skills.
