JOB SUMMARY
The Charge Nurse - Operating Room/Surgery at North Mississippi Medical Center is responsible for coordinating staffing and assignments in the operating rooms based on patient and specialty-specific needs. They act as a resource person for surgery scheduling, coordinating staff and room assignments during the shift, and serve as a supervisor when necessary. Additionally, they ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and work closely with the director to revise policies and procedures. As a charge nurse, this role oversees and guides employees to ensure efficient task completion, promoting teamwork and effective coordination.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Clinical Practice:
- Uses the nursing process to provide safe, quality patient care and document accordingly for intraoperative procedures.
- Works to ensure his/her compliance with all NMHS policies and requirements as directed by the Nurse Manager and Educator.
Communication:
- Delegates tasked to be completed during the shift to ensure EOC guidelines are maintained on a daily basis for Joint Commission compliance.
- Acts as a liaison to coordinate scheduling needs and alterations with CRNA and Anesthesiologist in charge.
Customer Service:
- Monitors customer service through assessment and evaluation.
- Recommends and implements actions for improving
- Patient population to be served ranges from neonate, pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
Self-Development:
- Maintains competency by staying informed of changing trends in the nursing practice.
- Attends annual review and unit specifics within the department.
- Performs required continuing education hours online and in classroom.
Regulatory Knowledge:
- Complies with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
- Licensed by the board of Nursing for the state.
Supervisory:
- Relief duties as needed for O.R. Clinical Director and/or other members of leadership team during the twenty-four-hour shift
- Coordinates staffing and assignments of operating rooms based on patient and specialty-specific needs of the O.R.
- Delegates tasks to staff such as assembling instruments, supplies, equipment, and organizing and stocking of operating rooms.

Ensures staffing ratios are appropriate throughout the shift based on unit based matrix while maintaining appropriate productivity.

Anticipates resources needed to provide the best quality of care for the patients
Assimilates data and reports appropriately to providers when necessary. Implements protocols when necessary by using critical thinking skills.
Upon completion of the preceptor class, orients new employees to the unit and reports progress to the nurse manager and/or educator.
The charge nurse has routine contact with physicians, ancillary personnel, other nursing personnel, patients, family, visitors.
They must demonstrate effective interpersonal skills to all customers/co-workers, and in all aspects of patient care and job performance.
