Overview
The Summer Associate role will be a part of the Technology & Optimization team within the Compliance & Public Policy division. The team offers automated solutions for compliance processes and reporting by providing toolsets, guidance, training, and data-driven insights. The objective of the team is to centralize, automate, and enhance Compliance processes in each section while standardizing the approach so that each team across various sections can mutually benefit from cross-collaboration.
The Summer Associate will work together with a team of project managers, business intelligence analysts, and data scientists. The team possesses a wide range of expertise ranging from analytics, data science, reporting, to project and process management. The role will have opportunities to work across various teams within the department. It will be essential for the candidate to be a problem solver, quick learner, and self-starter in order to identify opportunities to support and develop solutions.
The candidate would be responsible for assistance with researching, defining, and enforcing data automation solutions from various databases and sources (on-prem databases, Azure Data Lake, Application Service Layer). The candidate will also perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of Compliance’s data usage to identify areas of efficiency. Based on the data discovery, the candidate will be responsible for leading process improvement meetings and breaking down complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2025 and ending in August 2025. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2025 or later.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and manage reporting, dashboards, data models and analytical results

Evaluate and define functional requirements for analytics and business intelligence (BI) solutions

Ensure effective management of projects from inception through implementation
-
Retrieve, analyze and validate data and test accuracy of reported results
-
Work directly with project leads to understand requirements and propose key analytics solutions to drive effective decision-making and influence business objectives

Produce actionable reports that demonstrate key performance indicators, identify areas of improvement for current operations, and show root cause analysis of problems

Analyze and summarize business operations, customer and/or economic data in order to improve business intelligence, optimize operating effectiveness and predict business outcomes

Identify trends and patterns in business data; create data visualizations to support business decision making

Build new and/or modify existing database/data warehouse/data mart and business intelligence solutions to meet business and system requirements

Collaborate with business units and senior management to conduct needs assessment to support business unit objectives

Support complex Data Science and Big Data projects

Effectively communicate data outcomes to business stakeholders and leadership

Review project deliverables for quality, accuracy and compliance with Navy Federal policies and procedures

Ensure project deliverables are met in accordance with customers' expectations, timelines & budget constraints

Identify and resolve operational and performance gaps and obstacles; implement changes and improvements

Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, or other related degree

Significant experience in project leadership and execution

Significant experience in problem resolution including determining root cause, scope and scale of issues

Proficiency in understanding and communicating data presented in models, charts, and tables and transforming it into a format that is useful to the business and aids effective decision making

Proficiency in understanding and analyzing models that predict the probability of an outcome

Effective skill in collecting and manipulating data used in effective decision making

Effective skill identifying and analyzing business requirements and recommending solutions

Effective skill presenting findings, conclusions, alternatives, and information clearly and concisely

Advanced verbal and written communication skills

Advanced database and presentation software skills

Advanced word processing and spreadsheet software skills
Technical Skills:
- Advanced skill in Data Management, Data Validation/Cleansing, and Information Analysis

Advanced skill in Python, SQL, and Data Querying (able to pull/transform data)

Advanced skill in interpreting, extrapolating, and interpolating data for statistical research and modeling

Advanced skill in analyzing statistics and reports to determine business performance, trends, and reporting

Advanced skill in the use of measurement and statistical practices to analyze current and historical data to make predictions, identify risks, and opportunities enabling better decisions on planned/future events

Knowledge of and the ability to perform basic statistical analysis such as measures of central tendency, normal distribution, variance, standard deviation, basic tests, correlation, and regression techniques

Knowledge of data models, design tools, business/technical requirements, statistical programming languages, and data queries

Familiarity with Data Engineering concepts (ex: ETL tools and techniques)
