Position Summary for Lead Operator
The Sugar Foods Villa Rica operation is a food manufacturing, packaging and distribution facility. Machine Operators at Sugar Foods serve as owners of a set of machines or lines within a process area with an emphasis on serving as a technical expert and resource for our teams to lean on. Lead Machine Operators are responsible for maintaining and optimizing the machines they are responsible for by running the equipment, set-up, operation, regular and basic maintenance, and troubleshooting of their machines. Machines/Lines at Sugar Foods include ROPAK packaging machines, Can Line, Bartelt among others. The Villa Rica plant is a fast-paced 24-hour operation. The Operators you work with are responsible for ensuring that their machine and/or line safely produces the highest quality products for Sugar Foods customers. The Lead Machine Operators is expected to exercise good judgement with an emphasis on safety first and attention to optimizing equipment for quality production. Lead Operators are expected to help refine and ensure standard work processes are followed in-order-to maximize the effectiveness of their equipment while always looking for opportunities to continuously improve how their machine, line, and team operates. Key Responsibilities

Learn, master, and own the production lines you are responsible for within the facility.

Review daily schedule and prepare for the requirements of the shift.

Check that all safety mechanisms are working properly and that all team members understand and adhere to safety rules.

Check machine settings and match to the product run using graphical interface.

Start-up and operate your equipment safely to produce quality product to target.

Communicate effectively with material handlers who supply your line to ensure you have the right materials for proper line set-up for your run.

Communicate effectively with line associates and temporary staff (packers and stackers) to ensure proper line set up (materials and settings) and schedule execution.

Run machine at expected standards.

Take the lead on weekly start-up and daily machine changeovers.

Troubleshoot issues that arise during normal operation.

Interface with maintenance team on any large-scale technical problems outside your scope.

Ensure standard work is understood and followed.
Job Functions

Prepare Your Machine, Lines, and Teammates

Meet with the Operator from the previous shift to learn about any problems, challenges they may have encountered in order to ensure a smooth hand-off and start-up

Review daily schedule and properly prepare for the requirements of that day’s shift

Check that all safety mechanisms are working properly

Observe Machine Operators Run and Lead their Lines Safely and Effectively

Inspect machine and line to ensure readiness for safe start-up

Check settings and match to product run using graphical interface

Ensure machines run at expected standards

Troubleshoot machine operations and determine when to take the machine off-line

Work with maintenance team on any mechanical problems

Conduct preventative maintenance on machines and line
Manage and Optimize Machines and Lines

Maintain the Equipment You are Responsible for:

Clean, lubricate and make minor adjustments/repairs using basic hand tools

Perform basic preventative maintenance

Optimize utilization of resources to ensure the safest and most valuable use of equipment

Identify process Improvements and make suggestions to your supervisor

Maintain 5S in your area

Know your lock out/tag out procedure

Ensure all machine safety devices are intact and working

Ensure proper use and storage of all safety tools, lifts, knifes, etc.

Ensure machines and lines are properly set to produce to our quality standard

Perform all required quality checks and record (scales, seal testing, package integrity…)

Stop production of line or machine when quality is not at expected level

Continuously Learn, Train, and Coach

Seek out Maintenance Technicians to get guidance when needed

Help other Operators and Line Associates on quality procedures and expectations
Qualification Requirements:
-
3+ Years of experience in operating machines.
-
1+ Years of experience operating horizontal form fill packaging machines.
-
1+ Years of experience as Lead Operator
-
Experience with machine setup and changeovers.
-
Experience with regular machine maintenance, and basic to medium troubleshooting.
-
Experience with scales – Yamato scales, Ishida scales.
-
Experience in maintaining/troubleshooting packaging machines.
-
Experience in running and troubleshooting variety of machines. Example: baggers, case erectors, case packers, palletizers.
