Description of Job
THE ANNOUNCEMENT CLOSING DATE FOR THIS POSITION IS EXTENDED UNTIL OCTOBER 1, 2019
The work unit for this position administers transportation construction and design contracts within a specific geographical area and to oversee the contractors and consultants performing the work.
Design activities include the development of construction plans, specifications, and preliminary estimates for the advertisement of the budgeted transportation projects, along with the unit's specified corridors and areas of Region-wide or statewide interest.
The Engineering Physical Science Technician I position provides technical engineering support to the unit by drafting, designing, inspecting, measuring, surveying, checking, and documenting the work of Contractors and Consultants to certify the quality and quantity of the work performed. This position will gain experience in the design aspects of projects as well as training in inspection of project work, documentation of pay quantities, surveying on various construction projects.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assist in designing construction projects by computer aided drafting, calculating, earthwork calculations, spreadsheets, databases, and other design programs for compiling and checking of quantities in accordance with current procedures and standards and preparing a complete PS&E package;
Make detailed inspections of contractor's methods, procedures, workmanship, and materials for items as they are constructed to ensure they are in compliance with plans and specifications and report results of inspection;
Provide office engineering support by checking project pay items documentation, posting quantities in computer database, checking contractor payrolls, recording contractor manpower and equipment, monitoring daily traffic control;
Measure, calculate, and document quantities of work performed by the Contractor using measuring devices, calculators and computers;
Other job duties as assigned.
Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
Occasional evening and weekend work for project meetings/inspections
Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
Required to operate CDOT vehicles

A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
AND at least four years of experience assisting in completing documentation for the design and /or inspection of construction projects.
A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
Substitution: Coursework from an accredited college or university in Construction Project Management, Engineering, or Project Management will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.
