Summary

The Video Platforms team at InterDigital is a team of highly motivated, fast paced, and highly skilled researchers and implementers. Our focus is on building end-to-end prototypes on a wide variety of software/hardware platforms and mobile devices using state-of-the-art technologies and standards. Our areas of expertise encompass virtual reality streaming, video-on-demand streaming, video broadcasting and multicasting, real-time interactive video applications, and optimized video delivery over 4G and 5G networks. Through working closely with InterDigital’s Video Standards team, we stay abreast of the latest video standards development activities in international standardization organizations such as ITU-T/VCEG, ISO/IEC/MPEG and 3GPP SA4. The Video Platforms project is seeking a Principal Engineer and Project Lead with the responsibilities and qualifications described below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Lead the Video Platforms team to design, implement, and showcase advanced video delivery systems based on state-of-the-art video technologies such as adaptive streaming, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), point cloud, and immersive video.
Design, implement and optimize DASH based on-demand and/or live streaming systems over a variety of wireless networks such as Wi-Fi, 4G and 5G networks with optimized user experience.
Support a wide variety of clients, such as mobile clients, wired and wireless VR and AR clients, etc. with customized and optimized system performance and user experience considering their specific computing power, battery power, network conditions, and so on.
Design and implement real-time video processing systems for VR and AR applications using 360? video and Point Cloud.
Design and implement performance optimized real-time video decoding and encoding systems based on H.266/VVC.
Define a comprehensive Video Platforms roadmap that includes emerging video technologies that are commercially promising and aligned with our other video projects. Lead the Platforms team to execute on the roadmap.
Work with other Labs departments to co-develop efficient end-to-end video delivery prototypes using advanced video technologies (such as H.266/VVC and Point Cloud) in combination with advanced wireless and networking technologies (such as 5G networks, mobile edge computing, and cloud computing) to optimize user experience.
Demonstrate the prototypes at important tradeshow events such as the Mobile World Congress.
Qualifications

PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with 12+ years of industry experience. Previous experience leading projects strongly preferred.
Experience developing adaptive streaming systems, virtual and augmented reality systems, and/or cloud-based computing systems strongly preferred.
Hands-on experience with building prototypes on a wide variety of software and hardware platforms required. Previous experience working with mobile platforms (iOS and/or Android) a plus.
Experience with building video delivery systems based on industry standards, such as the HEVC codec, MPEG DASH and/or MPEG-I standards preferred. Experience with ffmpeg, x265, libdash, libomaf, etc., a plus.
Experience with Android development environment, Point Cloud Library (PCL), OpenGL, Unity and GPU programming is a plus.
Deep knowledge in network protocols such as HTTP/2.0, RTP/RTMP and streaming protocols such as HLS and DASH.
Must be proficient in C++ and C programming.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Available and willing to travel.
Location: Princeton, New Jersey. Other North America InterDigital locations can be considered for qualified candidate.
