The Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Behavioral Health,
Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) is recruiting for multiple Nurse I/II (PSYCHIATRIC) positions.

Three shifts; 12.5 hours each

API operates as Alaska's only state-owned, 24-hour, 7-day a week, mental health facility that provides:
Acute, short-term, in-patient, psychiatric care of patients whose needs are so great or complex that an appropriate level of care cannot be provided in their home town or community, and
Adult Competency Restoration Treatment & Forensic Evaluation Services.

Treatment Units & RN I/II Float Positions Descriptions:
Chilkat Unit: The Chilkat Unit is a 10-bed, in-patient unit providing crisis psychiatric care to adolescents who are 13-17 years of age. The adolescents may be admitted on a voluntary or involuntary status.

Denali Unit: The Denali Unit is a 10-bed, Specialty Unit Services for Adult Competency Restoration Treatment and Forensics Evaluation Services for short-term and long-term care needs of patients sent to API from the Department of Corrections who are in various stages of the legal process. The Denali Unit also provides services for civil patients who are in need of a secure setting until their mental illness or their behavior has stabilized, and they are able to function in a less restrictive setting.

Taku Unit: The Taku Unit is a 10-bed, Specialty Unit Services for Adult Competency Restoration Treatment and Forensics Evaluation Services for short-term and long-term care needs of patients sent to API from the Department of Corrections who are in various stages of the legal process.

Katmai Unit: The Katmai Unit is a 26-bed, short-term, Adult Acute Care Admission unit for patients with a wide variety of acute psychiatric problems.

Susitna Unit: The Susitna Unit is a 26-bed, short-term, Adult Acute Care Admission unit for patients with a wide variety of acute psychiatric problems.

Nursing Office Float: This position will be assigned under the Nursing Shift Supervisor (NSS) in the Nursing Office as a Float Nurse working on each of the 5 patient care units, supporting admissions and back up to be Relief NSS.

Unit Based Educator: This position will be based on the unit and would work to provide patient care and staff education on the units.

Most Important duties of this position:
Under the supervision of a RN III Supervisor or Nursing Shift Supervisor (NSS), this position gives skilled nursing care to patients.
Provides individualized patient assessment and care, participates in therapeutic activities as facilitator or co-facilitator.
Administers medications to patients and provides medication education including expected outcomes, possible side effects, and any food/drug interactions.
Transcribe all orders; records this information in each patient's Electronic Medication Administration Record (e-MAR), and chart regarding patient behavior and responses to medication treatment.
Completes nursing assessments on newly admitted patients and acts as a back up to the Admissions Screening Officer as assigned.
Completes assessments for patients on close-observation special status, or patients that may require seclusion or restraint.
Determines and prioritizes individual nursing needs.
Gives direction to Office Assistant I's and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants including work assignments, and monitoring those assignments for both completion and accuracy.
Maintains the flow of patient care in relation to the patient's individual treatment plan, individualized interventions, and supports the Role Recovery Model.
This person reports any changes in patient behavior, responses to treatment, or changes in overall status to the appropriate member of the Treatment Team.
Understand the importance of the unit milieu and explain unit programs to patients.
Trained in Team Solutions and is responsible to assure that all unit programs are accomplished each shift.
De-escalating unpredictable, dangerous, or violent behavior.
Intervene non-verbally, verbally, or physically with patient's who may cause harm to themselves or others.
Recognize potential hazards to keep a safe and therapeutic environment.
Make frequent rounds to check patient's locations and safety.
Under supervision, meet with family, significant others, consultants, and representatives of other healthcare agencies.

Desired Strengths for this position:
Candidate with experience working with the mentally ill or developmentally disabled persons is preferred.
Ability to work independently and with good judgment, and the ability to work as a team member.
Must be able to apply discretion in handling confidential information and situations.
Ability to exercise a high degree of tact, discretion, and sound judgment in the performance of the work.
Must possess good organizational skills with ability to prioritize and productively manage time to ensure compliance with numerous deadlines.
Must be able to work effectively under pressure with continual interruption, reorganizing priorities in a dynamic, frequently changing work environment.
Must possess above average communication skills. Must be able to communicate information courteously, accurately, and effectively.
Ability to answer questions and determine appropriate course of action relative to incoming messages, calls, or requests.
Interpersonal skills will be utilized on a daily basis through interaction with a diverse, cross-section of people and organizations.
Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of the work and have the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of personalities.
Ability to greet visitors, answers the phone, and responds to routine inquiries.
Must competently operate an electronic health record and common computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook and Word.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
NURSE I (PSYCHIATRIC)
Graduation from a school of nursing, accredited by the National League for Nursing OR license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.

Special Note:
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska is required.

For some positions in this job class a background investigation including fingerprinting is required.

NURSE II (PSYCHIATRIC)
Graduation from a school of nursing accredited by the National League of Nursing OR license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Alaska.
AND
One year of entry level professional nursing. This experience is equivalent to Nurse I with the State of Alaska.

Other combinations of training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability; however, there is no substitution for the required training.

Special Note:
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska is required.

Some positions are located in institutions providing care for psychiatric or developmentally disabled individuals and require one year experience in these specialized fields.

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the I or II level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level of the position.
