Description of Job
THE ANNOUNCEMENT CLOSING DATE FOR THIS POSITION IS EXTENDED UNTIL OCTOBER 1, 2019
The work unit for this position administers transportation construction and design contracts within a specific geographical area and to oversee the contractors and consultants performing the work.
Design activities include the development of construction plans, specifications, and preliminary estimates for the advertisement of the budgeted transportation projects, along with the unit's specified corridors and areas of Region-wide or statewide interest.
This entry level engineering position will apply and implement engineering theories, principles, and standards to in-house design and construction work, and will learn to oversee, direct, and review the work and documentation done by consultants on projects. This position will learn to oversee both design and construction elements of consultant projects. This position will gain experience in the design aspects of projects as well as training in inspection of project work, documentation of pay quantities, surveying on various construction projects.
Under the guidance of a Professional Engineer, major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assist with preparation and management of construction projects through design and construction by interpreting and applying CDOT design standards;
Direct and monitor the work of consultants performing design and construction engineering functions;
Learn to apply the plans, specifications, M & S Standards, and project notes in the inspection of the work progress by contractors to assure conformance specifications by assisting in supervising, performing detailed inspections, and maintaining proper documentation;
Learn to prepare a complete and accurate account of analytical or procedural findings, pay quantities, project activities and status, correspondence, conditions, and problem identification and resolutions by completing various written and computer-generated reports;
Utilize computers and design software packages (such as SAP, OnTrack, ProjectWise, MicroStation, InRoads or OpenRoads, SiteManager, WMS/SMS, ArcGIS Pro, Word and Excel), set up project information, background and funding in SAP and OnTrack system, document pay items according to the percentage completed by prime and sub-contractors;
Other job duties as assigned.
Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
Occasional evening and weekend work
Travel required during work hours throughout the Region for response to construction and maintenance needs
Required to operate CDOT vehicles

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering. (A copy of your transcript showing the name of the college institution, the degree conferral and the graduate's name must be submitted to verify this requirement.)
A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain licensure as a professional engineer by the Board within eight years of appointment to the position.
Current enrollment as an Engineer-Intern or a licensed Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors may substitute for the required degree.
