As part of the Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) department, a successful candidate provides technical and procedural assistance to the site personnel for implementation and administration of Health & Safety systems. You will interface with all levels of management, with specific focus on the manufacturing/packaging, laboratory and distribution associates. On a regular basis, provide information and support to facilitate continuous improvement of Health & Safety systems. The Health & Safety Specialist keeps informed of regulatory and industry standards, and assists in the development of strategies and procedures to address changing trends.
Integrates HSSE policies and procedures into the daily operation of the facility. Monitors external changes in law, policies, and practices to define and confront risk to employees and the business. Communicates regulatory requirements to employees effectively, identifies potential risks and takes mitigation actions
Ensures the working environment is free from recognized hazards using approved occupational/industrial hygiene methods, implementing sound health & safety techniques/tools.
Manages appropriate health surveillance programs
Leads monthly MERT (Medical Emergency Response Team) meetings and ensures meeting content includes after action review and an educational component.
Provides coaching and technical assistance to develop employee knowledge of HSSE related topics, policies and programs. Demonstrates credibility by understanding the business and the range of issues facing managers/employees and ensures that HSSE is seamlessly integrated.
Delivers compliance and best practice training on topics such as: Lock out/Tag out, Machine guarding, material handling, medical and first aid, PPE, operating powered industrial trucks, respiratory protection, confined space, bloodborne pathogens, ergonomics, fire prevention, hazard communication, hearing conservation, fall protection, electrical safety, asbestos awareness, accident reporting, waste handling/storage, chemical spill response and emergency preparedness.
Conducts the HSSE section of the “New Employee “Orientation program.
Participates (and leads where required) in the site emergency action program which includes: chemical spill, evacuation, fire, and medical.
Conducts accident investigations for all incidents (recordable, non-recordable & near-miss) and ensures that the procedure for investigations is being followed appropriately.
Plans and conducts internal compliance audits of the HSE systems and manages the system to track and close out non-conformances.
Helps eliminate or reduce the occurrence of unwanted, undesired events (injuries, illnesses, inappropriate HSSE behaviors and conditions.)
Experience and Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Biological, Chemical, Environmental Sciences or a related field.
Three (3) years of relevant experience is required.
At least one (1) year in an HSSE manufacturing facility is highly preferred.
Possession and continuous maintenance of valid First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.
Experience in elements of a successful ergonomics program.
Background in compiling data and preparation necessary for regulatory reporting.
