High Energy Laser Beam Control Engineer - Entry Level

Full-timeEstimated: $85,000 - $120,000 a year
This position is for an entry-level individual contributor in the field of Beam Control Segment (BCS) engineering for High Energy Laser (HEL) weapons systems, reporting to the Lockheed Martin Space Optical Payload Center of Excellence. The BCS is the electro-optical suite that acquires, tracks and delivers the HEL beam onto the target, and Lockheed Martin is an industry leader in their design and manufacture. We successfully delivered the BCS for the megawatt-class Airborne Laser system and recently demonstrated ATHENA, a strategically transportable HEL system with tactical range that successfully shot down five unmanned aerial systems at the White Sands Missile Range in August 2017. You will be joining a world class BCS engineering organization that is applying rigorous engineering practice and advanced technologies to both strategic and tactical HEL systems. As an entry-level engineer you will learn on the job, and gain exposure to broad areas in beam control, including: acquisition, tracking and pointing; jitter and line-of-sight control; wavefront control and adaptive optics; turret assembly design; optical bench/opto-mechanical design; safe-and-arm systems; algorithms and data processing; integration and test; and general systems engineering. From there you will begin to concentrate on your chosen focus areas, be assigned to project teams, and work on challenging problems as you build your directed energy and engineering career at Lockheed Martin.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physical or Computer Science, or Mathematics. The requirements of this position can be met either by recent graduates with a strong technical foundation or by early career engineers who are interested in pursuing a new career track in the field of Beam Control yet have very little actual experience in it.

Desired Skills:
Advanced Degree (MS/Ph.D) in Engineering or Science. Academic Coursework, Laboratory or Industrial experience with electro-optical systems including or related to high energy laser systems, including telescopes, astronomy, and remote sensing systems.
