Senior Optical Engineer
What you'll do:
Lead optical engineering activities from conceptual design through final design, manufacturing, and assembly. Specifically, this position is for the development of high-acuity tactical and space-based electro-optical sensors.
Work with other engineers in a collaborative and cross-disciplinary environment to develop and implement novel state-of-the-art and innovative optical systems for space-based applications designed for science, defense, intelligence, and commercial customers.
Work with new business development to define top-level optical system architectures as well as performing detailed optical design and analysis.
Support Advanced Program development by writing and briefing proposals, responding to RFIs, writing white papers, and participating in proposal reviews.
Prepare, participate in, and present material at design reviews.
Occasionally work hands-on in a lab environment with optical hardware as well as performing analytical work and technology and hardware development.
Support multiple activities across multiple business units with the support of early career optical design engineers, provide mentoring and career development direction through on-the-job training and formal training activities. Also provide support through peer review and failure review board processes.
Develop and maintain key relationships with internal and external customer communities.
Perform optical architecture trade studies for optimal optical design forms considering a multitude of design for practices (i.e. Design for performance, volume, mass, manufacture, test, cost, schedule, environmental factors, etc.).
Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
Perform other duties as necessary.
What you'll need:
BS degree in Engineering or a related technical field, plus 8 or more years of related experience.
Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
Advanced degree in Optical Engineering or a related technical field is preferred.
Experience in optical design engineering with a strong background in tactical and space-based optical systems from initial concept development through delivery.
Ability to manage the flow of Mission- and Sensor-level requirements to lower levels of assembly (i.e. requirements on optical sub-systems, optical design form, and/or optical components). Understanding of requirements verification methodologies and documentation.
Detailed optical engineering experience for refractive, reflective and catadioptric systems. Engineering experience with imaging, radiometric, spectrometer, and laser transmit/receive systems across multiple spectral ranges (ultraviolet, visible, infrared). Experience developing optical performance error budgets to include design, manufacturing, assembly, alignment/test and environmental considerations. Experience working with mechanical, structural, and thermal engineers to develop high-fidelity structural, thermal, optical performance (STOP) models for performance predictions and requirements verification.
Knowledge of a common optical design code such as Code-V, Zemax, OSLO is a benefit. Additional experience should include data and model flow with mechanical and thermal engineers (e.g. exporting optical design into CAD models, and iterating opto-mechanical designs for efficient use of mass, volume, and thermal constraints while meeting optical and system-level performance requirements).
Optical engineering experience for EO sensors operating in harsh environments such as cryogenic, high-radiation exposure, high-temperature variants, and those requiring high straylight rejection.
Knowledge of optical manufacturing capabilities and their influence on design, performance, cost, and schedule.
Position requires working at all Ball Aerospace’s Colorado campuses (Boulder, Broomfield and Westminster) for extended periods of time.
Current Top Secret (TS/SCI) clearance with a current favorable single scope background investigation or a DoD T/S clearance is desired but not required. The ability and willingness to obtain such a clearance is required.
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.
May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
May access other facilities in various weather conditions.
Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
Successful applicant for this position must be eligible to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access to classified/sensitive material. A current DoD clearance is not required to be eligible for this position, however the successful applicant will be required to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access within a reasonable time after the offer is extended and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance. *US Citizenship is Required. By applying to this position you are agreeing to complete a National Security Clearance Pre-Screen Questionnaire, if one is required, to evaluate your general ability to obtain the required security clearance or government customer access associated with this position.
Relocation for this position is Available
US CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED
