Under limited direction, perform risk analysis on individual applicants for Life, Income Protection, and Office Overhead insurance. Perform at a level of competence that will ensure acceptable loss ratios. In addition to understanding basic medical conditions, prognoses, and mortality risk, the life and disability underwriter must be able to identify and make decisions about morbidity. Additionally, the underwriter must be comfortable with performing financial analyses and making determinations about the applicant's financial risk, in addition to the morbidity/mortality risks. Progressively responsible role, working toward the position of Sr. Life & Disability Underwriter.

Essential Functions

Evaluate and determine the degree of risk involved in all new and existing life and disability policies within delegated authority levels and company guidelines
Determine the appropriate rate classification for new and existing life applicants
Evaluate medical records, consumer information reports, financial information of both a personal and business nature to analyze risk and insurability level
Approve, postpone, or decline all types of insurance applications
Effectively partner with co-workers and management to create a high- performance work unit
Promote and maintain high customer focus by communicating effectively and promptly, offering reasonable solutions that meet customer needs while protecting the business objectives
Effectively communicate with applicants, policyholders, and other professionals

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in related field, or equivalent experience
Minimum 5-7 years experience in profession involving critical thinking, data analysis and verbal/written communication skills, preferably in a medical/disability/life function requiring some financial analysis
Demonstrated proficient ability to navigate and effectively use Excel and Word, as well as comfort with other technologies

Resourceful; ability to work independently
