Position: Life Support Systems Engineer FT/non-exempt
Facility: Aquarium of the Bay at PIER 39
Location: San Francisco, California
Job Summary: This position is responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the aquarium’s life support and building systems. In addition, this position will regularly interact with the Animal Care Department to insure the health and safety of our animal collection. The Life Support Systems and Facilities Department is staffed 24/7. This position is a night shift. Reliability is essential to this position.
Essential Functions: Conduct periodical rounds of all life support and building systems. Log current status of systems and immediately alert supervisor regarding any issues with systems. Perform regular scheduled maintenance of equipment, and repair as needed. Report any animal health concerns to the animal care staff. Bring in make-up water (SF Bay) as needed and monitor water quality before, and during intake. Backwash main life support system filters as needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities: Follow AZA, OSHA, and all local/state standards. Adheres to all Aquarium of the Bay standards. Perform special assignments and projects as requested. Assist with other shifts as needed. Able to work days, nights, holidays and weekends as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong communication skills, and proficiency with Microsoft suite. Aquarium, water treatment and facility maintenance experience preferred. Other trade skills (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, etc.) also preferred.
Education & Work Experience: Degree or work experience in related field essential.
Licenses and Certification Requirements: Valid California Driver’s License required, AALSO Certificate preferred. Any other relevant certificates.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to remain on your feet for long periods of time. Must be able to sit, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, jump, and carry objects for short distances. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. without difficulty.
Working Conditions: This position functions both indoors and outdoors, with potential exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather. Must be able to work in a wet environment, over and next to water, at heights, in crawl spaces, and in tight spots.
Compensation: This is a full-time non-exempt position (currently at a 20% reduction due to COVID-19) with a full benefit package after a 90-day probation period. Salary range dependent on experience. This position is approved for COVID-19 vaccination under the SPHO designation of Essential Critical Infrastructure Worker under the Health Care and Public Health Sector, Category 21.
