Responsible for abstracting, coding and/or verifying all inpatient and /or outpatient records according to established procedures and standards.
Formalized acute care coding education by an AHIMA and /or AAPC program preferred. Successful completion of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology courses preferred.
For Hospital Coding - one of the following credentials; RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, COC, CPC, or CCS-P required within one year of hire. This requires the incumbent to sit for and pass the exam prior to the end of one year of employment. For Professional Coding - one of the following credentials; CPC, COC, CCA, CCS, RHIT or RHIA, is required within one year of hire. This requires the incumbent to sit for and pass the exam prior to the end of one year of employment.
At least one year of acute care hospital coding experience, or two years experience in professional coding, which includes competence in using computerized abstracting and encoding system preferred.
Must demonstrate the ability to be detail-oriented and perform tasks at a high rate of accuracy. Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to type at or above the rate of 25 wpm. Must be available to work weekends.
