National Endowment for Democracy (NED)
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a congressionally funded, private, nonprofit grant-making organization in Washington, D.C., seeks an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Democracy (JOD), a quarterly publication that addresses the problems and prospects of democracy around the world. The Assistant Editor also serves as the assistant to NED’s Vice President for Studies and Analysis and to the Journal of Democracy’s Coeditor. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
The Assistant Editor will create the “Back of the Book” section of the Journal of Democracy, assist with editing and proofreading, carry out research, perform information-management tasks, and provide administrative support to the Coeditor and Vice President.
Editorial and Research Support:
Research, write, and edit the “Back of the Book” section of the JOD, including “Election Watch,” “Documents on Democracy,” “News and Notes,” and “Books Received.”
Copyedit, fact-check, and carry out background research on manuscripts.
Manage the editorial review process for unsolicited manuscripts.
Oversee correspondence with authors, potential authors, subscribers, and publishers, and address inquiries as they arise.
Provide research and editorial support to the Vice President and staff of the International Forum for Democratic Studies.
Coordinate with the associate editor to oversee the design and launch of a new JOD website, and assist with tracking publicity for JOD articles.
Assist with the preparation of special JOD online and print content and books for the JOD book series.
Perform administrative tasks for the JOD Coeditor and the NED Vice President.
Manage all electronic and paper files for the JOD and Coeditor.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., political science, international relations, history);
Computer skills: experience with Microsoft Office required; familiarity with InDesign preferred.
Some editorial experience preferred;
Strong writing and editing skills;
Authorized to work in the United States.
Ability to work as part of a team;
Attention to detail;
Excellent verbal and written communication and solid organizational skills;
