At Sun Light & Power, the PV Foreperson is the primary person in command on any job site. She or he supports the Superintendent while acting as the central communicator and advisor to a crew of three. The Foreperson is also trusted with communicating with our Superintendents, Project Managers, and Engineers as well as clients, GCs (general contractors), and onsite superintendents.
The best Forepeople are PV and electrical experts. They also have a sincere appreciation for safety and often hold a professional certification such as OSHA-10, OSHA-30, NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Professionals) certification and/or a C-10 electrical license.
The candidate we hire will have several years experience installing solar, ideally including commercial scale PV and residential work. She or he will be well acquainted with the tools of our trade and own a good number of tools themselves. Once familiar with our best practices they will be asked to run projects on their own but will always have access to a seasoned team of senior field advisors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide daily instruction to your team according to Superintendent’s expectations
Manage groups of up to six workers; direct and assign daily work and successive tasks to teams on and oversee group tasks, as well as participate in them at the same time
Assure implementation of site-specific Safety Plan, which identifies current and potential jobsite safety and vehicle hazards (i.e. ladder/electrical safety, fall protection, PPE)
Lead required weekly/monthly safety meetings and set the example for the Installation team
Ensure work site is clean and site is free of clutter/hazards. Maintain clean and neat tools and workspace
Safely operate power tools and hand-tools and ensure your team does the same
Oversee completion of work in a timely and accurate manner
Understand engineering plans, office checklists and work autonomously on a job’s Field File
Understand system layouts and correct the construction plans to create “As-Built” plans
Apply knowledge of grounding systems (install module, mounting system and inverter grounding, including raceways, bonding, electrode conductors, etc.)
Install electrical components (i.e. mount and install enclosures, combiner boxes, inverters and disconnects, etc.)
Plan and install conduit and raceways; set up wire pulls; label, test, terminate conductors
All Installers are expected to quickly learn the following on the job:
Acquire knowledge of construction safety and electrical safety standards
Know how to work within a wire pulling team: how to handle wire, how not to stress stranded wire
Know the basic wire colors per the National Electrical Code (NEC)
Understand the voltage issues involved with strings of modules (parallel vs. series)
Have basic knowledge of DC electrical systems, preferably some AC as well
Experience and Qualifications:
Proven previous skills managing work sites
Previous experience teaching PV Installers the basic practices of photovoltaic installation
Proven experience managing others including providing appropriate action and coaching to improve behavior and/or performance
Experience managing teams to meet deadlines on time and on budget
Strong work ethic & attention to detail; must possess positive attitude committed to quality work
Knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems
Ability to commission PV system and troubleshoot common problems (i.e. ground faults, polarity)
Proven knowledge of basic arithmetic, fractions, and geometry (must be able to use a tape measure, effectively calculate measurements, etc.)
Basic carpentry skills and knowledge of construction and electrical safety standards
Ability to work in extreme environments (hot sun, light rain, crawl spaces or attics, steep roofs)
Licensed, or willingness to become licensed, to drive forklift, scissor and boom lifts
Current CA driver license with acceptable driving record
Proven experience naming, identifying, and using basic power tools and hardware
Ability to lift at least 50 - 75 pounds; comfortable climbing ladders and working unusual heights
Familiarity with the warehouse environment and stocking practices
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles, and will be asked to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. She or he may be required to climb a ladder to a height of 15 feet daily and must be able to work productively while wearing a harness. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This full-time position pays a competitive base salary plus benefits that include: a contribution toward medical; dental and optical insurance, 9 PTO days, and 3 sick days, 7 paid holidays, and 2 VPTO (Volunteer Paid Time Off) days that enable you to volunteer for your favorite non-profit organization.
