We are seeking a Controller. This is an exempt, full time opportunity for an energetic, dynamic and hands-on leader. This role is responsible for accounting within the firm in compliance with the firm's policies and appropriate accounting principles and will provide leadership, oversight and review of the accounting team. This role serves as a key member of the management team and will support the firm by recommending appropriate actions based on in-depth accounting knowledge coupled with knowledge of the firm's business and markets.
The Controller leads the professional staff in our Seattle office including Accounts Payable Specialists, Accounts Receivable Specialist, Trust Accounting Specialist, Payroll Specialist, Corporate Accountant and Client Account Services Specialists. This position reports to the Director of Finance and works in close partnership with other managers and senior firm leaders as needed.
Establish the accounting policies and practices in support of business activities and management direction, and ensure compliance with current accounting and governmental regulations.
Maintain the general ledger / fiscal records, and prepare / assist in the preparation of financial information. Protect the assets of the firm by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls and monitoring the financial performance of the firm.
Manage the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll (equity shareholders and staff), trust accounting, corporate accounting, federal and local taxes, cash receipts, collections, bank reconciliations, Retirement and 401(k) Plan accounting, and other functions as required to satisfy accounting requirements.
Maintain and improve accounting systems by adopting new technologies and best practices.
Manage audits by public accountants/taxing authorities, and their related costs.
Prepare or supervise the preparation of all Federal & State Income Tax Returns, State & Local B&O, Sales/Use and other related taxes.
Manage fixed asset reporting, including additions, disposals and depreciation. Determine the proper accounting of all the firm's property acquisitions.
Develop and maintain financial models and analyses including business forecasts, return analyses, cash flow analyses and other reports as needed, comparing results against budget to identify problems/issues of the firm. Prepare regular and custom reports for senior management as requested.
Analyze expenses of the firm, identify cost cutting and process improvement opportunities, and make recommendations.
Interview, select, train, develop and manage assigned staff. Appraise performance; recommend salary action, promotion and termination. Develop a strong accounting organization with staff members who are capable of assuming diverse responsibilities.
Maintain the accounting staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training staff.
Maintain the accounting job results by coaching, counseling and disciplining staff; planning, monitoring and appraising job results.
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional networks.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or a related field required.
Five or more years of high-level accounting experience.
Three or more years of supervisory experience.
Master’s degree; CPA or CMA preferred.
Thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures.
Understanding of governmental regulations and reporting requirements.
Excellent leadership and human relations abilities.
Understanding of related auditing and IT functions.
Broad based knowledge of the entrepreneurial business environment.
Able to organize, coordinate and direct projects.
Strong oral and written communication abilities.
Solid analytical and technical skills.
Strong working knowledge of detailed financial data analysis.
Able to use all related hardware and software.
