RTI International is an independent, nonprofit research institute dedicated to improving the human condition by turning knowledge into practice. Within our International Development Group, we have a rapidly expanding Food Security and Agriculture Division. With a strong portfolio of projects, our work is focused on strengthening agricultural markets, engaging youth and women as critical members of the on- and off-farm workforce, and tackling malnutrition. Given the dynamic physical and social environments that impact food security and agriculture, we also work to build resilience in households, communities, and systems.
RTI International’s Food Security and Agriculture Division is seeking a Food Security and Resilience Specialist to drive our growth in the area of resilience through harnessing our relevant capabilities across the Institute and contributing to new business efforts. The position requires travel (both international and domestic) of up to 25% of time and will preferably be based in Washington, DC (subject to negotiation).
Develop RTI’s thought leadership and reputation in the area of resilience.
Develop a growth strategy for RTI’s work in resilience and contribute directly to new business, including writing and leading the proposals, concept notes, and expressions of interest, developing strategic partnerships, supporting capture, and tracking future opportunities, among other tasks.
Develop and manage relationships with key sector partners, donors, consultants, host country counterparts and stakeholders.
Collaborate with colleagues across RTI on capabilities relevant to resilience and food security, including food security and climate data analytics, political economy analysis, governance, local capacity building, health, and nutrition among others.
Serve as Program Manager as defined within IDG PMI responsibilities, providing project management support to complex resilience, food security, and agriculture projects.
Provide technical assistance to project and program portfolio in given technical area of expertise. This may include field-based short-term technical assistance.
Mentor and/or supervise staff, as required.
Support division and business unit communications to raise RTI’s profile in this area and ensure effective communication of our work to varied audiences.
Author and publish technical articles, papers, reports, blogs, and other materials on resilience and food security topics.
Lead presentations, seminars and workshops on topics relevant to the global food security and agriculture sector.
Master’s Degree in agriculture, economics, anthropology, international development, environmental science or relevant field and minimum of 12 years of relevant work experience, including business development (alternatively Bachelor’s Degree in agriculture, economics, anthropology, international development, environmental science or relevant field and minimum of 16 years of relevant work experience, including business development)
Solid understanding of and/or experience in resilience, food security analysis, agricultural market systems, and other topics related to chronic food insecurity and vulnerability at all levels (household, community, systems);
Understanding of food systems, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa;
Knowledge and experience providing technical and management leadership to complex projects that connect research and analysis with project implementation;
Significant experience managing USAID-funded projects; Experience or familiarity with other donors in the international development sector a plus;
Proven ability to write and lead development of technical proposals;
International field experience in developing countries;
Familiarity with international food assistance, emergency response, and humanitarian assistance policies a plus.
Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally sensitive and respectful;
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure;
