Job Description:

The Ophthalmic Scribe/Technician uses ophthalmic techniques to perform the preliminary work-up of patients, assists the physician(s) during the patient examination, and documents the patient encounter in the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR), as communicated by the physician.

  • Greet and escort patients warmly and professionally.
  • Collect and enter patient medical and ophthalmic history into the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Utilize ophthalmological equipment and tools to perform preliminary work-up of patients and to gather general information for physician use.
  • Apply eye drops.
  • Prepare examination rooms prior to each patient encounter, and ensure the room is clean and stocked with supplies at all times.
  • Assist the physician(s) by completing accurate charting and documentation of the patient encounter in the patient electronic medical record.
  • Use accurate procedure and diagnosis codes for performed procedures and administered drugs.
  • Educate patients on available co-pay assistance programs.
  • Assist with patient transfers, as necessary.
  • Travel to other locations, as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Excellent attendance required.
  • Minimum typing speed of 28 corrected wpm required.
  • Work experience in an outpatient clinic preferred.
  • Work experience as an ophthalmology technician preferred.
  • Scribing experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient keyboarding skills necessary.
  • Familiarity with EMR helpful.
  • Must be comfortable working in a team setting.
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Superior customer service skills necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills necessary.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to perform assigned responsibilities accurately and efficiently.
  • Knowledge and understanding of retina-specific ophthalmology terminology helpful.
  • Basic understanding of medical examination and procedures codes helpful.

Reports to: Office Coordinator.

Directly Supervises: Not applicable

Work Schedule: Core business hours are M – F, 8 am – 5 pm, with some variability based on clinic needs. Occasional travel between clinics is required.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Working Conditions:

  • Moderate physical activity (standing, bending, sitting, walking, pulling and lifting) for most of the work shift.
  • Clean office environment.
  • Potential exposure to body fluids with direct patient contact.
