SCHEDULE: Tuesday 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Thursday 4:00p.m. - 8:00 p.m.; Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of tasks related to Library patron services. Duties include, but are not limited to: sorting; shelving; answering patron inquiries; working the public service desk; and performing additional duties as assigned by the Library Branch Manager, Library Resource Sharing Coordinator, Circulation Supervisor, Children’s Room Manager, or Central Library Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Works public service desk; enters new users into the patron database; charges and discharges items; performs all necessary functions to maintain accurate and up-to-date patron database. The Sights & Sounds position will only work with the public service desk. Assists patrons (parents and children) in using the public access catalog and in locating information and/or materials through use of the automated system or online catalog. The Lawson McGhee Circulation position will assist patrons in locating materials through the use of the automated system. Pulls reserved materials from shelves to be sent to other agencies; checks in reserved materials received through courier delivery; resolves related problems. Collects fines and/or other charges; prepares daily deposits for the Library Business Administrator; makes change as necessary. (This sentence does not apply to the Sights & Sounds position.) Provides Library patron with information via telephone conversations or face-to-face contact. Prepares books and materials for shelving; includes unloading, discharging and sorting tasks; shelves items Reads shelves to ensure that books and/or media are correctly shelved and correct errors. Maintains photocopiers and/or printers by refilling paper trays, changing toner cartridges, and assisting patron in proper handling/usage, clearing paper jams, etc. Assists patrons with the use of the Self-Check Machines. (This does not apply to Children’s Room or Sight & Sounds positions.) Processes new books and other materials. (This does not apply to Children’s Room or Sight & Sounds positions.)
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Interlibrary Loan position will use Unicorn Automated System to locate material in KCPL collections, pull books from the shelves as necessary, handles shipment of materials to/from other libraries. The Sights & Sound position also pulls reserved media materials from shelves to be sent to other agencies; resolves related problems. Uses RTI disc check machine to resurface CD’s and DVD’s; prepares them for cataloging. The Children’s Room position also assists parents and children in using public computers, including the reservation system, internet access, software applications, printing; resolves related problems. Designs, creates, and hangs decorations and departmental signage; creates thematic displays. Plans and conducts story-times and/or children[s programs and activities in the Library and as needed in other locations using books, flannel boards, CD players and puppets. Executes daily opening/closing procedures for department. Conducts library tours and presentations. Provides reference services to parents and children by answering in-depth reference questions requiring knowledge of specialist resources and children’s literature. The Library Branches position also assists patrons in using public computers, including the reservation system, internet access, software applications, printing, and troubleshooting. Plans and conducts story-times. The Lawson McGhee Circulation position also creates weekly New Book list for use by the Knoxville News Sentinel newspaper. Processes returned mail and send postal for address verification. Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health. Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma, or GED required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, such as a computer, printer, telephone, copier, calculator, book trucks, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
