Aurora Day Camp Staff Description
Aurora Day Camp, for children ages 3 ½ - 16, is the only dedicated full summer day camp in the world for children with cancer and their siblings. It is a camp designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational and physical needs of these children while allowing them to enjoy the comforts and safety of their own homes at night.
There are sleepaway camps that provide a great experience during the summer months, but Aurora Day Camp offers benefits that a resident camp cannot. Aurora Day Camp will provide a true camping experience while the children remain within their own familiar surroundings. Most pediatric oncology medical sleep away camps last only one to two weeks. Aurora Day Camp offers a 6 ½ week camping experience.
Aurora Day Camp offers a full, multi-week summer activity program plus year- round camp-like programs. These additional programs take place at our campgrounds and other locations that provide exclusive use of their facilities. Additionally, our in-hospital program Aurora On Wheels allows children to experience “camp” in the hospital by providing activities for those who are awaiting treatment.
Best of all, Aurora Day Camp is offered free of charge to all children being treated for cancer and their siblings on a non-sectarian basis. By raising the needed funds from outside sources instead of charging the parents, we can help to alleviate some of the costs, and the related stress, that parents incur caring for a sick child throughout the year. Children who have received medical clearance from their physicians are welcome to attend. Though 6 ½ weeks of camp programming is offered, children may register and attend any and every day they feel well enough to do so.
Aurora Day Camp is actively hiring an individual to serve as our gymnastics and tumbling specialist. We are looking for individuals who are mature, responsible, energetic, creative and excited to make a tremendous impact in the lives of our children. This individual must be able to keep children engaged and entertained along with bringing a positive attitude. APPLICANTS WITH AT LEAST 3 YEARS GYMNASTICS EXPERIENCE NEED ONLY TO APPLY.
Our staff works with children between the ages of 3 ½ and 16 for up to seven weeks. Staff positions commonly involve being with children for the full length of the camp day, from camper arrival at 8:30 AM until 3:45 PM. Because our camper population may have greater emotional and physical needs, and because staff stays in close proximity with the campers, the experience is demanding. It is critical that staff members are attentive to children, their individual needs and concerns, and demonstrate a willingness to do more than his or her share.
