JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Library Clerk

Location: Monrovia Public Library

Work Schedule:
This is a part-time 20 hours per week position that will require some evening and weekend flexible scheduling.

Tuesdays: 12:00pm - 8:00pm

Saturdays: 8:30am - 5:00pm

Mondays 8:30am-12:30pm or Fridays 12:00pm - 5:00pm are flexible as needed.

Nature of Work:
This is entry-level work. The employee in this position is responsible for assisting other staff members and assisting patrons of the Library. This position is classified as Non-Exempt for the purpose of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Organizational Status:
The person in the position of Library Clerk reports to the Branch Manager or the Branch Circulation Manager in branches that have that position.

Essential Functions of the Job:
Cooperates as a team member to help fulfill the Library’s Mission Statement: “To enrich the educational, recreational, and cultural life of our community through materials, information, and programs that foster a life long love of learning.”
Uses library automated systems for transactions in the charging out and checking in of library materials, processing patron records, determining materials status, locating resources within the system, arranging for transfers of library materials, placing holds, registering new patrons, and performing additional procedures as needed
Collects fines and fees and maintains accurate records of the same
Assists patrons in the use of the library, particularly how to locate materials and services and how to use them
Assists in shelving library materials and helps maintain neat arrangement of the library
Answers the telephone and directs questions to appropriate staff members
Issues library cards
Clears the book and audio-visual drops as needed
Assists at public desks as needed

Participates in special projects

Performs additional duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Knowledge of basic computer skills
Knowledge of basic math skills
Ability to work well with the general public, patrons, superiors and other members of the Library staff, some of whom may be upset, irate, or unreasonable
Ability to operate computer and library automation systems, telephone and other office equipment in a proficient manner
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
Ability to comprehend and follow the Library’s policies and procedures
Possess the physical and mental ability to work independently to the extent appropriate to the position
Must possess a reputation of honesty, integrity, and reliability
Must have the desire and ability to serve the public with friendliness, tact, and diplomacy

Minimum Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma required.

Working Environment:
The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of office environments. The employee will have regular contact with other employees and members of the public. The employee may interact with upset staff and/or members of the public.

Physical Demands:
Must possess the mobility to work in the library setting which includes the ability to stoop, stand, squat, stretch, climb, lift, carry, shelve and retrieve books and materials from shelves and storage locations generally not exceeding 40 pounds. Must possess the vision required to read printed materials and a computer screen. Must possess the ability to hear and speak with the public both in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard.
