Bloomberg BNA seeks an Acquisitions Manager is responsible for planning, developing, acquiring and editing practitioner-written articles in assigned subject matter areas for publication in Tax & Accounting journals and online products. Manages journals to ensure quality and timeliness of publication. This individual seeks out and works with authors to develop articles that fit BBNA’s lines of business and add value to Tax & Accounting products. Develops partnerships with tax and accounting professionals and professional organizations that will lead to new articles, new publications, and/or marketing opportunities.
Plan and develop article topics by researching and staying abreast of legal developments and practical issues relative to assigned practice areas. Collaborate with editorial staff, as well as BBNA author practitioners and advisory board members and customers to develop topic ideas and identify potential article contributors.
Commission and acquire practitioner-written articles from skilled and respected practitioners. Establish a due date and production timeline for each article.
Review and edit articles for quality, accuracy, and clarity, including cite checking. Collaborate with managing editors to complete full technical review of articles’ content to ensure standards for quality are being met. Communicate any necessary revisions to authors as needed.
Compile respective Journal issues for both print and electronic publication. Work with the production team to compile issues and to learn and effectively use publishing system.
Consult and coordinate with Editorial Director(s), as needed, for editorial reviews/scheduling, problem-solving with authors, and other activities.
Manage activities and assigned staff to ensure timely publication of articles, appropriate scheduling and planning of articles, and effective reporting to management.
Work with marketing staff to develop strategies to support overall marketing plans, including direct mail, email, and web.
Make recommendations to enhance, improve, or modify existing articles and journals to improve quality, increase readership, increase revenues and/or reduce costs.
Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
5+ years’ of progressively responsible professional publishing experience with responsibility for various acquisitions, marketing, and/or editorial functions; legal writing and editing experience required; demonstrated success in acquiring and publishing tax and accounting content; experience must include participation in a full cycle of planning, developing, and coordinating a publishing program with a legal publishing operation; excellent knowledge and understanding of publishing, including current capabilities and developments in digital publishing; ability to perform high level research that involves interpretation and analysis as needed to develop recommendations of broad, complex topics and issues that may have significant impact; ability to assist in article development and assess quality of articles submitted by authors; ability to make non-routine decisions that require substantial interpretation of established policies and procedures, clear objectives, and business/professional standards; excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal with the professional organizations, practicing attorneys, and potential authors diplomatically and effectively and to coordinate multi-author writing projects; excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate, negotiate, advise, persuade, or resolve issues that are complex and/or sensitive in nature; ability to work independently, plan, organize, set priorities, and work on several projects at once; strong business or journalistic writing skills including the ability to present information that requires originality, organization, exposition, judgment, and/or persuasion; ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with other BBNA units and departments; flexibility to travel; and actively participate in a variety of outside professional activities; subject-matter knowledge of one or more of the group’s publishing areas is highly preferred; active membership in one or more professional organizations is highly preferred. Bachelor’s degree required; law degree highly desirable . Knowledge of tax law is highly desirable.
