The Peer and Family Advocate provides crisis response services, peer counseling, and linkages to services and support for consumers of the Department of Behavioral Health’s (DBH) services; assist with the implementation, facilitation and on-going coordination activities of the Community Support and Services Plan in compliance with the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) requirements and perform related duties as required.

  • Develops partnerships with diverse community and consumer groups, including advocacy, self-help, family alliances and parent groups.
  • Trains consumers and family members on processes and programs to improve consumer relations, consumer satisfaction, and consumer understanding in culturally diverse communities.
  • Provides support by assisting with the development and implementation of wellness and recovery strategic plans.
  • Coordinates the ongoing development of consumers in planning and program development activities.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of communications materials for consumers and family members
  • Develops and facilitates educational, skills building, recreational and advocacy groups with consumers at the Holistic Campus, and within the community.
  • Plans, develops, prepares, and conducts presentations on a variety of topics including Mental Health Services Act, DBH services, Wellness and Recovery model, and personal development and experiences.
  • Accesses and distributes to the public, various internet resources related to education; utilizes the computer to maintain files, records, and basic statistics on program activities, participation, and attendance.
  • Serves as a mentor to teach and show consumers and family members how to function more independently and in finding and accessing community resources.
  • Attends meetings, provides feedback reports, and make recommendations to the Holistic Campus Advisory Board to assist the Program with achieving its goals and objectives.
  • Assists consumers in joining self-governed consumer entities and groups.


  • Associate, or Bachelor Degree preferred, OR
  • Certification in Consumer Readiness., OR
  • Certificate of Completion in Mental Health Worker Training Program.
  • Valid California driver’s license and current auto insurance per contract requirements.
  • CPR / First Aid certified.
  • Working knowledge of filing/record keeping and commonly accepted office practices in a professional setting.
  • Fluent in Spanish or other threshold language relevant to the population served.
  • Intermediate computer skills using MS Office software, with the ability to create tables, spreadsheets, and databases, and perform minor troubleshooting.
