Departmental Overview

The Lawrence Hall of Science is UC Berkeley's public science center. We have been providing parents, kids, and educators with opportunities to engage with science since 1968. Our mission is to inspire and foster learning of science and mathematics for all, especially those who have limited access to science. We investigate, create, and evaluate educational materials and methods, professional development programs, and hands-on learning experiences for our science center, schools, communities and homes.

The Production Studio Assistant is responsible for fostering a positive team-oriented work environment with an emphasis on public service and the mission of the 7-day-a-week program of the Lawrence Hall of Science. Incumbent serves as a member of the Production Studio team assisting with exhibit installations, fabrication, repairs, refurbishment and general operation/maintenance of educational materials and exhibits, reporting directly to the Shop Superintendent.


Under supervision provides skilled and semi- skilled mechanical and carpentry work a variety of tools processes, and materials. Responsible for daily turn on/turn off of interactive exhibits ensuring all elements are functional, and maintain educational materials for the museum floor and classrooms reporting to Shop Superintendent when assistance is needed. Position maintains storage and shop areas including tools and machinery, and ensures proper use of safety equipment.

Required Qualifications

Excellent communication skills and attention to detail, team-oriented attitude
Graduation from High School or GED
Minimum 2 years experience in a general shop or skilled trade with a variety of tools used in metal, plastics and woodworking, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, must include experience
Standard work week includes one weekend day, holiday work required.
Standard work week is Tuesday-Saturday, holiday work required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in an interactive Museum, Science Center or Educational Environment
Prior customer service experience in an active family environment

Salary & Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $23.65-$25.34/hour
