PT Evidence Technician
You MAY be assigned to the CSPD (Colorado Springs Police Department) Impound Lot or the CSPD's Evidence Unit. In this position, you will collect/manage evidence, property, and items scheduled for destruction and provide technical support to the Supervisor.

This is a year round hourly (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker's Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association).
Normal work hours will vary but be limited to 29 hours per week. Total hours worked will not exceed 1,500 annually.
Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
Evidence Unit Technician
Retrieve and transport evidence, property, and items for destruction from/to all police divisions
Ensure all required information corresponds with the information in the EvidenceOnQ system during the evidence intake process and that a barcode label is attached; check label information and the evidence tracking system for completeness
Scan evidence and property into storage locations; enter data and maintain all evidence and records for strict chain-of-custody accountability
Process items requested by officers, detectives, the Crime Laboratory, DAs (District Attorney's) Office, and outside agencies
Inspect firearms before storage; verify serial numbers; and ensure weapons are unloaded, properly marked, and packaged
Identify proper storage locations for various types of items, including flammable lockers, refrigerators, freezers, firearm, and narcotics as well as general storage
Prepare evidence boxes for the safe storage of evidence for each homicide case
Store evidence and personal property in a manner that promotes item integrity and security
Protect stored items against damage/deterioration/loss/tampering in a manner that poses no hazards to persons or cross-contamination with other objects
Process owner notifications on released evidence and personal property; prepare personal property for release; verify identity and/or proper documentation for release of evidence or property; and document history of evidence or property regarding release or disposition
Assist with the destruction of contraband, firearms, and other items designated for destruction
Prepare and transport evidence to and from CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation)
Answer phones and respond to emails; make citizen appointments to retrieve personal property; and provide information to CSPD personnel, DA's office, and the public
Perform evidence/personal property disposition in strict accordance with local, state, and federal laws and established policies; schedule appointments for customers; and conduct appointments for the release of property and firearms to citizens
Testify in court
Impound Lot Technician
Ensure that all required vehicle information from the Impound Car Card corresponds with the information entered into the Impound Tracking and EvidenceOnQ Systems
Take into custody evidence and property (primarily impounded vehicles) turned in by law enforcement officers for preservation and safekeeping; release evidence and property in accordance with city, state, and federal laws and CSPD policies and procedures
Verify all vehicle information at point of intake; check vehicle identification numbers for accuracy
Inventory vehicles, search for ownership paperwork, and document safety hazards
Check vehicle and case information in the NCIC database, State Department of Motor Vehicles database, and EvidenceOnQ; correct errors
Prepare and process all paperwork required by law for impound notification, evidence notification, and auction or release disposition; verify validity of all ownership paperwork prior to release
Legally dispose of vehicles through the facilitation of bi-monthly impound auctions
Scan and file all documents to meet records retention guidelines
Document vehicle/personal property damages and secure sensitive/valuable items
Contact an officer for hazardous or illegal items; remove sensitive items such as narcotics, money, or weapons from vehicles
Research evidentiary release documents by reviewing case files, court notes, evidence retention laws, and DA's guidelines; coordinate with officers and the DA's office to ensure appropriate authorization to release
Maintain a safe and secure facility for the protection of employees, customers, and the public; escort all non-law enforcement personnel on lot, including tow truck drivers, citizens, and insurance appraisers
Collect fees from customers and process daily deposits
Provide support to outside agencies, including local, state, and federal law-enforcement personnel; fire departments; the Drug Enforcement Agency; the Metropolitan Vice/Narcotics/Intelligence Division; DA's office; county coroner; and private tow and insurance companies
Attend training; operate a front-end loader to move vehicles within the Impound Lot
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of methods and techniques of filing and record-keeping
Knowledge of established safety procedures related to safe lifting, handling biological/blood contaminants, sharp objects, and firearms
Knowledge of basic police operations and protocol
Knowledge of principles and practices of property and evidence custody
Ability to remain current on pertinent policies, procedures, and guidelines
Strong attention to detail; and excellent customer service in often tense situations
Successful candidate will have:
A high school diploma or GED
One year of full-time clerical or administrative support experience
Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Possess, or obtain within three months of hire, NCIC/CCIC (National Crime Information Center/Colorado Crime Information Center) certification
Possess, or obtain within three months of hire, Department of Transportation Hazmat certification
Ideal candidates will also demonstrate:
Experience working a law enforcement setting
Experience handling police evidence
Critical thinking skills
Physical Demands: The ability to lift up to 30 pounds overhead is required.
Environmental Conditions: Work is performed equally outside and in an office environment with some travel and exposure to extreme weather conditions, dust, noise, vibrations, and biohazards. Work also includes exposure to damaged and unclean vehicles.
The job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a polygraph examination, extensive background check, and other pre-employment assessments.
