Full Job Description
Duties
You will serve as operator-in-charge of the complete plant, on second and third shift.
You will independently start, operate, adjust, stop, maintain, and perform various operational repairs in multiple-fuel (oil and natural gas) power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment.
You will check measurement devices (e.g., feed water regulators, flow meters, flue gas temperature gauges, water level indicators) to determine if boilers are operating within prescribed limits.
You will perform operational maintenance and make repairs of limited/moderate complexity on mechanical or electrical parts.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Elements for this position are: 1) Operating power boilers and auxiliary & pollution control equipment (e.g., electric feed water & fuel pumps, electric driven forced draft fans, air compressors, relief valves, water softeners, and de-aerating equipment. 2) Adjusting fuel feed controls. 3) Checking measurement devices to determine proper boiler operations. 4) Maintaining Boiler operations while working under little supervision of a work leader who observes tasks in progress and/or upon completion to make sure they are performed properly.

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position. May perform shift work.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment. The work requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Workers frequently lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing 40 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works indoors and occasionally works outside. May be subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes in the work area; and cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, hot water, steam, and contact with piping and boilers. In addition, may work on catwalks and ladders.

Suitability must be completed prior to establishing a report date. Continued employment in this position is
dependent upon favorable adjudication of applicable background investigation.
