General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal organs, such as intestines including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and the thyroid gland (depending on the availability of other specialists), breast surgery, etc. A General Surgeon also performs invasive procedures that deal with hernias, and diseases involving the skin but may perform additional procedures as necessary. A general surgeon is expected to be familiar with the salient features of other surgical specialties in order to recognize problems in those areas and to know when to refer a patient to another specialist. They may assist surgical specialists in performing specialized surgery (e.g., thoracic, plastic, orthopedic). The surgeon uses a variety of diagnostic techniques, including endoscopy, for observing internal structures, and may use specialized instruments during operative procedures.
