The Chief Information Officer (CIO) works with the Firm’s senior management in providing vision and leadership in developing and implementing information technology initiatives and continuous improvement to achieve strategic technology and Firm objectives. The CIO directs planning and implementation of IT systems in support of business operations in order to improve cost effectiveness, service quality, information security and business development, including the direction of daily operations of all IT functions.
The CIO will oversee, supervise, and mentor all personnel in the Technology Department and will ultimately be responsible for providing the Firm’s attorneys with systems that effectively and efficiently serve client and attorney needs. The CIO will directly report to the Firm’s Managing Partner and indirectly to the firm’s Technology Committee, but will also have direct contact with and be responsive to all attorneys within the Firm including the Practice Group Chairs and Office Heads.
The CIO is accountable for the following primary responsibilities:
Lead IT strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems across the Firm.
Continually engage technology users in the Firm to obtain and understand their technological needs, as well as their perceptions of the Firm’s technological capabilities. As the technology leader of the Firm, be actively engaged on technology matters with Firm management and help ensure that all Firm personnel are properly informed of: (1) the Firm’s technological capabilities; (2) plans for new and improved technological capabilities and (3) Importance of information security to keep client and firm systems and data secure.
Advise and counsel the Firm on the development of a long-term technology road map, along with interim plans to provide immediate short-term improvements in existing systems. Continually monitor the plan and revise as needed to anticipate and adequately meet future firm needs.
Manage the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrade, and support of all IT systems, including PCs, laptop computers, tablets and other mobile devices, servers, operating systems, applications, hardware, software, and peripherals.
Serve as the primary source of internal information on trends, research, applications, security and effective practices related to information technology.
Supervise recruitment, development, retention and organization of IT staff that supports the needs of the Firm, with an emphasis on providing appropriate supervision of staff members to ensure their work is of high quality, they are accountable for progress, and they are exposed, through the CIO, to the Firm’s culture of integrity, high character, and personal respect.
Identify opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IT systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing, and in-house development.
Develop IT business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for spending and initiatives.
Ensure continuous delivery of IT services through oversight and monitoring of systems and staff performance.
Establish IT departmental goals, objectives, operating procedures and performance measures.
Develop, track, and control annual IT operating and capital budgets.
Assist in the development and execution of a Firm-wide IT disaster recovery and business continuity plan.
Negotiate technology purchases and oversee implementation and various related services provided by IT and third parties.
Review IT hardware and software acquisition and maintenance contracts.
Act as an advocate for the Firm’s IT vision via written and in-person communication.
Establish and maintain strategic IT service provider partnerships.
Recommend IT opportunities to provide better service to clients, perform work more efficiently or gain a competitive advantage through the use of technology.
Lead the firm’s technology committee and gain consensus for new technologies and policies.
Work closely with the firm’s general counsel (GC) on all client and firm information security initiatives and serve as the main point of contact for all information security related questionnaires and assessments.
Manage the firm’s Litigation and trial support needs including hosted service providers and other eDiscovery partners.
Work closely with the firm’s facility manager and office heads on all office move and expansion projects.
About the Person
Preferred candidates for this position will possess a bachelor’s degree in computer science, business or other appropriate concentration. An MBA or other advanced degree will be considered a plus and is desired. It is also expected that the candidates will be able to demonstrate continuing education activities in information systems.
It is expected that the successful candidate will have at least ten years experience in technology acquisition and support for a professional service or similar company, of which at least five years should be at a managerial or director level. Prior law firm experience is preferred, including experience employed in a director-level position with a law firm, but qualified candidates without law firm experience will be seriously considered.
The CIO will have substantial experience in the management of large user multi-location, information systems operations and experience, preferably, working with professional service firms. A strong background in operating and managing wide/local area networks (WAN/LAN), VoIP systems, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, SCCM, iManage or other DMS, VMWare and Case management systems are important qualifications. Experience with the implementation/integration of public and hybrid cloud-based systems in a business or law firm environment is considered a plus. It is expected that the successful candidate will have experience in strategic planning and execution. The candidate must have had some experience in supervision and managing complex technical work through subordinates.
Knowledge of legal practice is extremely helpful and the CIO must be able to communicate and work effectively with lawyers in a high stress environment. The CIO must also have the demonstrated ability to recruit, motivate and retain an effective staff in technical areas.

Is familiar with a variety of the IT field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Leads and directs the work of others.
Has strong written and verbal communication skills.
