New Stand is a media-retail hybrid striving towards the reinvention of the traditional newsstand, which we believe hadn’t evolved with the times until we came along. Our ambitious goal is the total upheaval of the commuter routine via retail locations in unexpected places around New York City. We have three Manhattan stores (and counting), over a dozen locations on the NYC Ferries, and new airport locations in LA and Minneapolis.
With a focus on new products, new media, new spaces, and new experiences, we do our best to infuse a sense of novelty and fun in everything we do, from the snacks we sell to the content we write and curate for our app.
We are looking for a college student or recent graduate based in the city to help us create content for the app and website. The ideal candidate should thrive on staying up to date with all things new and have strong editing/proofreading/writing abilities. That means you're that friend who's on top of everything from the latest crazy thing Elon Musk has done to the newest food obsession taking over Instagram.
The job is absolutely what you make of it. The sooner you can start, the better.
About The Job
You will be working directly with our Editor and Editorial Associates to expand our app and media platform's reach.
Your responsibilities, to begin with, will focus on the sourcing of content and its curation within our channels, namely our app. That means we need someone who has a strong grasp on internet and youth culture, an excellent eye for valuable and novel content, and a good sense of empathy that allows you to appreciate all aspects of our amazingly eclectic audience. Beyond that, there is an important and open-ended writing and video component, where we will task you with creating content about the city, its people, places, and anything you would personally like to work on provided it fits our tone.
The job is absolutely what you make of it and the more ideas you have the better.
We have no specific experience requirements, though an academic focus or previous work in media, marketing, or journalism are a plus. Our most important criteria is that you are a good fit for our team. Strong writing skills, a loose knowledge of social media marketing, and a minimal knowledge of Photoshop are also a plus, though we don't mind training the right person if they possess is an awesome attitude. In addition, you must be able to work on weekends.
A cover letter is strongly encouraged.
We look forward to hearing from you soon!
