Spinitar - La Mirada, CA3.9

Full-time$70,000 - $100,000 a year

Take Point on a Multitude of Interesting Audio-Visual Projects

If you're a proactive project manager with outstanding people skills and experience managing projects in the audio-visual, construction or technical industries, this is your opportunity to join a respected and growing company with a team-oriented, performance-based culture where you can develop professionally and make a strong impact. You'll take point on a project team enjoying strong success, as demonstrated by a robust pipeline of potential and pending projects, and manage audio-visual unified communications projects throughout the full project lifecycle. You'll make your mark on your team, within the larger company and with your customers by ensuring delivery of best-in-class service and solutions.

At Spinitar, we believe that well-trained, service-focused employees are as important to our growth and success as any growth as any initiative or business strategy. As such, we take care of our employees by providing the resources necessary to develop their skills and earn the certifications needed to succeed, and by recognizing and rewarding success. This is an environment where you'll enjoy the autonomy and support to do your best work, and where that work will be noticed. It's an environment where people thrive. We know our employees enjoy working here -- it's demonstrated by our positive, upbeat atmosphere and the high number of long-tenured team members. You will work out of our La Mirada, CA office and will primarily support the Southern California market. Initial training will take up to 30 days and will be conducted in La Mirada.

Spinitar is a California-based company and an award-winning audio-visual unified communications, product, and service organization providing innovative visual communication systems to the industrial / commercial market worldwide. Spinitar is comprised of three business units: Unified Communications, Visual Products Group, and Service. Our 28-year old firm provides services to corporate, education, and government users.

The Requirements

To be a strong fit for the role of Project Manager, you will need:

  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of project management experience in the audiovisual, construction, technology or other closely related industry
  • Excellent leadership/supervisory skills
  • Strong computer skills, including a proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), MS Project or similar project management software, and comfort learning new systems/applications
  • PMP and/or CTS certification highly preferred

Additionally, you should have the following core competencies and characteristics:

  • A self-starter mindset with the ability to effectively manage tasks and projects with limited direction or supervision
  • Excellent planning skills
  • Proactive communication -- provide answers and status updates to the customers' questions before they ask
  • A team-player mentality and the ability to serve as a driving member of the team
  • Excellent time management, multitasking and organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

In addition to these requirements you must be willing and able to travel domestically between 25% and 50% of the time.

Role Overview

As Project Manager, you will partner with and take point on a small team including two account managers and a designer, and be responsible for full cycle project management (presale to final inspection) of all the unified communications projects generated by the team. Currently, the team has a backlog of a dozen or so projects which you'll take on upon joining us. While you'll jump in with both feet, as you're coming up to speed you'll also work with and be mentored by an accomplished Program Manager who serves as foreman/coach for several teams. He/She will make sure, as will your other team members, that you have the tools and knowledge necessary for success. Going forward, you will generally manage anywhere from ten to twenty projects in various phases simultaneously. Projects can vary in size and scope, however, the steps you will take in each phase of the project lifecycle will be the same regardless of project size.

At Spinitar, we have a unique business model which both brings out the best in our employees and provides them the autonomy to do their jobs and excel. Rather than a typical reporting structure, we are each accountable to our teams (modeled as individual business units) and those teams earn recognition and rewards based upon their performance as a unit. That means that every member does their job to the benefit of the team and does what it takes to earn team success. As such, you'll be involved in the presale/prebid process, helping the Account Manager set the stage for success and close the business. As a rule, 10% of your work is done by the time we land the business, from building relationships to establishing scope and defining specs.

You will be on point for all of the team's projects and will be responsible for completing each project on time and on budget to the customer's highest satisfaction. Your ability to communicate regularly and effectively with your customers, teammates and internal resources (i.e. the Technical Services Manager, installation teams, warehouse personnel, subcontractors, etc.) will be paramount to your success. Daily activities will include project communications, scheduling, creating task lists for technicians, managing deliverables from the designer, and overseeing the multitude of tasks leading to project completion. Typically, you'll travel to the customer site during the Install Phase (and Design Phase) to ensure that everything is in place and understood, and to ensure the project is set for success.

Role Specifics

Design Phase

  • Perform initial site walk and validate scope with customer
  • Create meeting minutes from kick-off meetings and design reviews
  • Develop and update project schedule
  • Manage deliverables (drawings, submittals etc.) from designers and coordinators

Pre-Install Phase

  • Schedule rack installation for internal assembly of systems
  • Conduct pre-install meetings with technicians and designers
  • Identify, obtain purchase orders, and schedule any subcontractor activities
  • Validate that in-house testing is complete before shipping racks to installation site
  • Ensure all equipment is present and staged before install begins

Install Phase

  • Be on-site with install team on first day to ensure that they have adequate information to proceed
  • Develop a day by day task list for install team
  • Monitor and update daily task list and keep customer and/or consultant updated on progress
  • Schedule Designer and Programmer on-site as needed

Closeout Phase

  • Develop and update written punch list as the project comes to completion
  • Coordinate the development and delivery of documentation including equipment manuals, training materials, and as-built drawings
  • Schedule Designer, Programmer, and Technicians, as needed, to close out the project
  • Conduct training sessions on all projects - schedule Designer or Programmer to assist on complicated systems
  • Obtain sign-off from customer

Why Spinitar?

Professional growth through certifications -- at Spinitar we believe strongly in certifications and will pay for you to earn those you don't already have! For example, while we'd prefer you have a PMP or CTS coming in the door, if you don't have them, you'll earn them here. While other companies talk about people being their greatest asset, at Spinitar we truly put people first and demonstrate our commitment through action.

Visibility -- while you'll work with and receive direction from the Program Manager/Coach, team members ultimately report to a Principal. Principals, such as our CEO (a past president of InfoComm), take a personal interest in the teams and the work they produce, meaning you'll have visibility at the top and your successes will be noticed!

Teams built for success -- our teams are cohesive units that are built for success. They are self-driving and maintain a gourd reporting dynamic where each member is accountable to every other member. In other words, the standards are set and the group as a whole motivates and supports each individual. Anyone not pulling their weight is visible team-wide and weak links don't last. In fact, bonuses and rewards are tied to team results making it even more imperative that each member is pulling their weight. Of course, that's not a negative thing. People enjoy working on high-achieving teams and have fun in the process.

Career growth opportunities -- while you could be happy and challenged in this role for years to come, once you prove yourself, other opportunities could become available. This role is being added to accommodate our strong growth and we anticipate that strong growth will continue to provide opportunities for our proven performers.

Wide exposure --our customers include Fortune 500 companies, top law firms, government, healthcare, education organizations, and other high profile companies/industries. They have complex audio visual needs and network requirements. That means you'll be exposed to a variety of challenges and work on interesting projects. We don't do cookie cutter work, but create solutions to meet individual needs.

Fun and transparent environment-- people like working at Spinitar, as demonstrated by the long tenure of our staff, and it's not difficult to understand why. We work hard and have high standards, but we also enjoy the benefits of a transparent, tight-knit team environment and we like to have fun. For example, once per quarter we have a "State of the Union" breakfast to ensure we're all on the same page regarding where the company is and where we're going. We also enjoy some great perks: each year you will be eligible to participate in our "roll out the red carpet" Chairman's Club trip to an exciting destination such as Maui or Cancun. The winners are voted on by both peers and customers, and entire teams can be rewarded when meeting top goals.

Excellent compensation-- in addition to a competitive wage and bonus opportunity, we offer a comprehensive benefits package including all you would expect, such as health and other insurances, a 401(k) plan and paid time off, and a few surprises, such as a laptop computer and smartphone.

Keys to Success

As already noted, at Spinitar we manage workflow via a team paradigm. You will always be with the same team in order to maintain a high level of confidence for our customers and to ensure consistency across projects. For our customers that means that the knowledge gained on their first project will not be lost because the same team will return for the second, third and any subsequent projects. As such, building relationships with the clients and with your teammates will be a key element of your job and crucial to your success. As you work through each project, you'll also need to keep your coach and team in the loop and regularly updated. You'll enjoy the autonomy to perform your role, but including the team means you'll also have strong support when you need it.

Overall, your mission will be for you and your team will help make Spinitar a fun, profitable, world-class and customer intimate provider and integrator of audio visual solutions. You'll know you're hitting the mark when you:

  • Maintain current industry certifications
  • Maintain a customer satisfaction rating greater than 4.5 / 5.0
  • Ensure 90% of projects are signed off within 30 days of the beginning of commissioning
  • Meet estimated hours on 90% of projects

In addition, this is project management, and as you know through experience, the nature of the role can produce pressures. To excel, you'll thrive under pressure and perform well in the face of multiple deadlines.
