Job Description:
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Mildred H. McEvoy Library at Worcester Academy seeks a part-time library assistant to staff the library's reference desk on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The library assistant will help maintain a positive, collaborative library environment and will assist students and faculty with reference inquiries, printing and copying needs, and book location requests. This position will also aid the library director in collection and catalog maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND KEY OBJECTIVES

Close the library 4 nights each week
Assist students with reference inquiries/locating books in the collection and resources in databases
Shelve books
Assist in checking out iPads and use of other library/makerspace equipment and materials
Assist students and faculty with printing/copying needs
Assist with collection maintenance
Assist with journal/magazine subscription tracking
Update patron records and assist with catalog maintenance
Other duties as requested

Required Experience:
QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor’s degree or Massachusetts library certifications required
Master of Library Science preferred but not required [Omit]
Experience

3+ years in a school environment
Prior experience working in a library setting
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of Follett Destiny and databases such as the Gale suite, JSTOR, and ABC-CLIO products
Ability to troubleshoot printers/copiers
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Familiarity with using Apple products and willingness to learn to troubleshoot computer/iPad issues
Flexibility and ability to adapt to changes in library programs and services
A strong customer service mentality and positive attitude

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed primarily in a library environment with extended periods of standing or sitting at a desk or computer terminal and extended periods of keyboarding.

Physical exertion may be required to lift office supplies and library materials from overhead and from the floor.

Often times, the employee must move, shelve, and retrieve library materials from high and low settings which requires moderate lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, pulling and pushing activities and extended periods of standing.,

Occasional assistance with the placement of library furniture, not to exceed a weight of 40 pounds, may be required.
