COORDINATING ENGINEER I (Sewer Section)
Department of Water Management
Number of Positions: 1 Full-Time
Under direction, coordinates and supervises the work of a construction engineering section responsible for the implementation of sewer related infrastructure projects.
Directs the conduct of field surveys to identify conditions that may impact the scope of proposed construction, repair and maintenance projects.
Meets with field engineers, staff, and consultants, to determine scope, costs, design criteria and specifications for projects such as water, sewer, and related systems and facilities.
Supervises staff and oversees engineering consultants functioning as design and resident engineers ensuring work is completed according to contract specifications and project time lines.
Interprets design plans and specifications to contractors and assists in resolving design and construction problems.
Directs the preparation of project status and cost reports to management and funding agencies.
Monitors projects assigned to staff and consultant engineers ensuring projects comply with engineering specifications, are completed on schedule and are within budget.
Directs the approval of partial and final payments to contractors. Authorizes design plans, contract documents, cost estimates and engineering calculations for construction or rehabilitation projects. Assists supervisory staff in resolving complex engineering design and construction problems.
Reviews and approves plan changes and contract modifications submitted by engineering staff.
Assigns various projects to staff and reviews and evaluates their performance.
Represents City at community meetings and to businesses affected by development projects.
Coordinates the department’s regulatory requirements for state and federal permits such as National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
May consult with other departments and agencies to coordinate personnel engaged in project engineering activities. may provide technical information on engineering projects at hearings and legal proceedings.
Performs related duties as required.

THIS POSITION IS IN THE SENIOR EXECUTIVE SERVICE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering plus five years of work experience in the planning, design and construction management of engineering projects including three years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, provided the minimum degree requirement is met. At the time of employment, registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) is required. A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required.

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
Previous work experience with infrastructure improvements design and construction projects.
Previous work experience working on sewer main design projects.
Previous work experience in the design and management of DOT or CDOT construction projects.
Previous supervisory work experience related to the responsibilities of the position.
Previous work experience in the management of professional services firms in complex engineering projects.
Previous work experience involving sewer work.
Previous work experience involving water and sewer construction and design.
Previous service in the Armed Forces of the U.S. on active duty continually for six months and have not been dishonorably discharged.

Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
