The State Bar of California (“State Bar”) is a public corporation in the judicial branch of government whose missions are public protection and access to justice for all citizens. The Office of General Counsel (OGC) employs the in-house attorneys to the State Bar to support these missions. The legal work in OGC includes advice to and representation of the State Bar Board of Trustees, committees and staff in administrative and civil trial and appellate litigation, and transactional work, in substantive areas such as Bar discipline and admissions; diversity and access to justice initiatives; labor and employment; intellectual property; bankruptcy; real estate; contracts; privacy; ethics; regulatory and legislative work; governance; public records and open meeting laws; and general corporate matters. OGC also reviews closures of disciplinary complaints filed against attorneys, but does not handle attorney discipline proceedings in State Bar Court.

OGC seeks an attorney whose focus, but not sole work, would be drafting and negotiating contracts, as well as handling bankruptcy and judgment enforcement matters, and review of disciplinary complaint closures. Familiarity with government contracts is a plus. The position will involve understanding State Bar contract templates and policy, associated legal risks and liability, and the ability to provide accurate, timely and business-oriented legal advice to clients in connection with State Bar contracts. The candidate must have good communications skills.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in contracts legal work is required, along with an interest and willingness to learn other subject matter areas. The candidate must possess sound judgment, an ability to prioritize, and be capable of working successfully in a dynamic yet collegial team environment.

The State Bar offers a unique compensation package, including competitive salary, partial paid employee and retiree health insurance premiums and other benefits, 14 holidays, vacation/sick leave, CalPERS Retirement, a 457(b) savings plan, a commuter subsidy and more. The successful candidate will be placed in a classification (Attorney I-III), and provided a salary, commensurate with their experience.

Active membership in the State Bar of California and no professional disciplinary record in California or any other jurisdiction are required.
