The Center for Latino Policy Research (CLPR) was founded in 1989 in response to the challenges of limited educational, political, and economic opportunities facing the Latino/Chicano population. Since then Center-affiliated faculty and graduate students have published a number of research and policy studies on the many factors that affect the Latino experience in the United States. Each year CLPR has also organized a vigorous lecture program on pressing Latino issues for the campus community. In 2016, after 13 years of being on the third floor of the Shorb House, CLPR acquired custody of the entire three-story building. The vision for the new expanded CLPR as the Latinx Research Center is that it will become an intellectual space that encompasses the arts and humanities as well as the social and policy sciences. CLPR/LRC provides office space for a number of visiting scholars and hosts graduate and undergraduate seminars as well as staff development meetings. In short, CLPR/LRC is an important space for the Latinx campus community at Berkeley.
• Manages, plans, organizes and implements small events or portions of larger events such as symposiums, conferences, program events, banquets, and VIP briefings.
• In coordination with the CLPR/LRC Chair and associated Center faculty, coordinates and implements small and large events, workshops, and meetings on behalf of CLPR/LRC.
• Organizes, implements, and independently manages small, non-complex events or portions of larger events such as symposiums, conferences, program events, donor events, banquets, workshops, selection committee meetings, and VIP briefings.
• Facilitates communications related to events and other institute activities. This includes facilitating the production and circulation of posters and fliers, and email publicity to the Center’s various listservs using Mail Chimp; sending out announcements and other information to news media, campus community and the general public; and manages the Institute’s and related Center’s various social media tools including Facebook, Twitter and websites.
• Contributes and participates in preparing materials for events, briefings, meetings, and other programs including conveying text in tables and charts, prepares drafts of materials, photocopying sets of documents once approved by Chair of the CLPR/LRC, etc.
• Maintains CLPR/LRC’s websites, online event calendars, and social media accounts.
• Supports CLPR/LRC development activities including preparing fundraising appeals.
• Supervises work study student assistants, who may also serve as front desk receptionists at the Shorb House. Schedules, trains and fills in for work study students as needed.
• Scouts potential locations and/or vendors for future events. Oversees operational support staff.
Participates in planning, organizing and staffing larger or more complex events, including being assigned responsibility for a specific event segment such as parking/transportation, catering, etc.
• Manages event logistics, speaker travel, participant registration, parking/transportation, catering, travel reimbursements, vendor payments, etc. Maintains the calendar for public programs and internal CLPR workshops and meetings. Reserves the place where events and programs will take place. Responsible for sending out invitations for the events. Recruits and follows up with community and campus co-sponsors as needed.
• Maintains CLPR/LRC’s websites, online event calendars, and social media accounts. Makes sure that timely updates to CLPR’s websites and social media channels are made. Develops new content and implements a coherent strategy for publicizing events and activities and communicating the CLPR/LRC’s activities and accomplishments to the wider public.
• Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
• Working knowledge of concepts, principles and practices of event planning and production and public relations.
• Working knowledge of the campus, its programs, policies, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
• Working organizational skills, including skill in effectively coordinating and organizing multiple details.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and political acumen, including skill in effectively representing the campus to its publics.
• Good judgment and effective decision-making and problem resolution skills, including skill to recognize and deal effectively and appropriately with real and potential problem areas, including skill to determine the issues/problems that need to be brought to the attention of higher level staff and/or management.
• Strong writing and graphic design skills, including skill in creating event publicity and communicating with speakers, campus/community co-sponsors, media, and the wider public.
• Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a busy environment.
• Self-directed and able to work independently and efficiently as a member of a relatively small staff.
• Expertise with various forms of social media used to effectively communicate events and activities (Mail Chimp, Drupal-based websites, Facebook, Twitter).
• Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Working knowledge of concepts, principles and practices of academic event planning and production and public relations.
• Working knowledge of fundraising and development in the academic or other non- profit sector.
