Production Engineering is the combination of software development, systems engineering, and operations. Ymail PE is the production engineering arm of our software developers and we make sure that the properties are always fast and available. One of the great things about PE is that we are fully embedded with our developers and we interact with them on a daily basis.

A Lot About You

We are seeking a talented engineer to hold an important stake in a team that runs critical operations and systems engineering for Yahoo! Mail. This position requires an aggressive learner and organizer with a strong passion to make a difference with their contributions!

Your Day

Function as a "go-to" technical generalist responsible for the overall health and performance of our platforms and applications

Develop tools to automate the deployment, administration, and monitoring of a large-scale Linux environment

Gain deep application-level knowledge of the systems.

Contribute to the overall design and specifications of our next generation applications

Work with development teams to harden, enhance, document, and generally improve the operability of our systems

Assist in the configuration/build-out of new deployments to facilitate our constant growth

Ideal candidate must possess a broad range of computer science skills. The candidate must be persistent, result oriented, and a self-starter.

You Must Have

Strong skills in system & application architecture

Strong application level troubleshooting and monitoring abilities

Strong programming fundamentals

Working knowledge of applications such as DNS, NFS and protocols such as TCP/IP and other internet protocols

Experience building automation

Excellent communication skills

Love to Have

Scripting - Knowledge of Perl, Python, PHP, Ruby, a definite plus

Automation - Chef experience a definite plus

Knowledge of tools like Netcool or Nagios

Responsible for managing clusters, preferably at least with hundreds of nodes

Experience with MySQL and commonly deployed database systems

BSCS or relevant experience

Experience with distributed DB/file systems. (HBase, Hadoop, Ceph)
