The Department of Radiation Oncology at The University of North Carolina (UNC) is seeking a medical physicist to provide clinical radiation therapy physics services for UNC’s North Carolina Cancer Center, located in Chapel Hill, NC and UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus, located in Hillsborough, NC.
The North Carolina Cancer Center is currently staffed with 11 Radiation Oncologists, 5 Dosimetrists, 12 Medical Physicists, and 1 computer systems managers/IT specialists. The North Carolina Cancer Center clinic is equipped with 2 Elekta Versa accelerators, 1 Elekta Infinity accelerator (soon to be installed), 1 CyberKnife system, 1 Tomotherapy Hi-Art system, 1 Mobetron intraoperative accelerator, 1 Elekta HDR system, a VariSeed LDR prostate system, and 2 Phillips large bore CT simulators. The Hillsborough Hospital clinic is staffed with 1 Radiation Oncologist and 1 FTE physicist. The clinic is equipped with 1 Elekta Infinity accelerator, with limited CT-sim capabilities on a Radiology CT scanner. Clinical treatment planning systems for the North Carolina Cancer Center and Hillsborough Hospital include Raystation TPS, Accuray MultiPlan & Tomotherapy TPS, Oncentra Brachy, and VariSeed Intr-Op TPS; Record and Verify uses Mosaiq. Ancillary RT systems include VisionRT and Calypso.
The successful candidate’s duties will be split (approximately half) between the North Carolina Cancer Center and Hillsborough Hospital. The candidate will provide clinical radiation therapy physics services for IMRT/VMAT, IGRT, SBRT, SRS, Intra-op and brachytherapy programs. The candidate will also perform staff physicist duties such as chart checking, machine calibrations, and quality assurance. The candidate will participate in acceptance and commissioning of equipment, gathering of dosimetry data, and commissioning of external beam and brachytherapy treatment planning. The candidate will be responsible for the precise and accurate delivery of radiation treatment plans and for the safety of patients and treatment staff.
Research: The successful candidate will be required to participate in clinically-oriented development projects with a research component.
Residency Program: The department supports a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency Program and, as such, mentoring of residents is expected.
The successful candidate for this position must have the following qualifications: (1) an MS or PhD in Medical Physics; (2) be ABR/ABMP board certified, and (3) have graduated from a CAMPEP-accredited residency and top-tier CAMPEP-accredited graduate program in Medical Physics.
Qualifications and Experience
Ideal candidates should have a desire to practice clinical medical physics, possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, strong technical skills, and a commitment to clinically oriented research and teaching.
Experience in IMRT/VMAT, IGRT, HDR brachytherapy, SRS, and SBRT are important.
Experience with the use and commissioning of RT treatment planning and delivery (especially IMRT/VMAT, SRS/SRT/SBRT), and R&V systems is highly valued.
